Jean Ngiam Research Fellowship

The Jean Ngiam Research Fellowship at the Centre for the Music and Health (CMH) at YST was established by Mr Ngiam Tong Yuen and Mrs Jean Ngiam.

The Centre for Music and Health is the first dedicated research centre in Southeast Asia to spearhead cutting-edge, evidence-based practices that leverage the efficacy of music for health and well-being. The Jean Ngiam Research Fellowship will support CMH in deepening its research efforts, engaging diverse stakeholders, and advancing cross-disciplinary collaborations – thereby driving the development of music-based interventions to improve lives.

Mrs Jean Ngiam is a Chartered Librarian and has been a firm supporter of NUS alongside her husband Mr Ngiam. In 2009, she established the Mr & Mrs Wu Jieh Yee Memorial Scholarship at the NUS Business School in honour of her parents. She holds a lifelong love for playing the piano starting from her youth in Hong Kong, followed by attending the Sydney Conservatorium of Music High School before graduating with a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Sydney, with Music as one of her subjects. She also has a Diploma in Education. The Research Fellowship honours her longstanding love for music and the arts, as well as her desire to support education and the community.

A chemical engineer, Mr Ngiam worked for the Gas Department in PUB and ExxonMobil before his retirement. He is still active in the Institution of Engineers Singapore, was a member of the Professional Engineers Board for several years, and continues to be active in the Singapore Standardisation movement. He has contributed to community organisations such as RSVP Singapore and was the first recipient of the President’s Volunteerism & Philanthropy Award (Senior) in 2015. In memory of their parents, Mr Ngiam and his siblings, together with their children and other family members, joined hands to establish the Mr and Mrs Ngiam Fook Quee Scholarship at NUS in 2006.
