Nusa Swara

April 16, 2026 7:30pm

YST Recital Studio
Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, 3 Conservatory Drive

Inspired by their collaborative teaching of YST’s World Music Ensemble course, “Nusa Swara” (Island Voices) is presented by Syafiqah ‘Adha and Rosemainy Buang and explores the creation of new music by harnessing sounds of the Nusantara/Malay world with technology. Through their collaboration, Syafiqah and Rose will uncover novel musical expressions from the convergence and collision of traditional and contemporary elements from each of their own musical background and expertise. Their music will also explore themes of customs and rituals, home, identity and womanhood.

ABOUT SYAFIQAH ‘ADHA
Syafiqah ‘Adha is a prominent figure in Singapore’s music scene as a composer, a traditional Malay music accordionist and an educator. While formally trained in the genre of contemporary classical music, Syafiqah emerges as a versatile composer. Her creative aesthetic is a unique voice that stems from her foundations as a classical-trained musician and a traditional Malay music practitioner. Syafiqah often engages in collaborative multi-disciplinary and intercultural works to expand her creative output and find new meanings in collective musical expressions.

ABOUT ROSEMAINY BUANG
Rosemainy Buang is a Singaporean gamelan musician, educator, composer and sound artist who, with over a decade of gamelan training, continues to broaden her creative horizons through interdisciplinary collaborations, approaching art-making with a multi-disciplinary and experimental spirit that seeks to question, build upon, and expand the limits of traditional soundscapes, philosophies and aesthetics.
