Remembering Mr Tan Kah Tee: A Lifelong Friend and Benefactor of YST

6 January 2026

YST mourns the passing of Mr Tan Kah Tee, a major donor and longtime benefactor whose generosity and presence had a meaningful and lasting impact on the Conservatory and its students.

A firm believer in the power of music and education, Mr Tan supported YST in ways that directly shaped the artistic journeys of our people. Beyond his philanthropy, he was a familiar and welcome presence at the Conservatory, forging warm relationships with colleagues and taking a genuine interest in the lives and progress of our students. He regularly attended student showcases and concerts, offering encouragement through his quiet support and steadfast belief in their potential.

Mr Tan also continues to enrich the musical life of the Conservatory through his generous gifts of the Tan Eng Chin Scholarship—created in memory of Mr Tan’s late father—and three concert grand pianos, including a Fazioli F278 Concert Grand for YST’s 20th Anniversary, and two Bösendorfer pianos (Imperial Model 290 and Johann Strauss). These resources are integral to teaching, learning, and performance at YST, and will continue to inspire students, faculty, and audiences alike.

YST is deeply grateful for Mr Tan’s generosity, trust and enduring commitment to nurturing young musical talent. His legacy lives on not only through the music made at the Conservatory, but also in the many students and colleagues who remember his kindness, encouragement and unwavering support.

Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones at this time of loss.
