ABOUT THIS EVENT
Musings
Defintion:
noun, muse. a person or personified force who is the source of inspiration for a creative artist,
verb, muse: to be absorbed in thought, a state of deep thought or dreamy abstraction
What inspires a composer to write a specific work? Sometimes the answer is simple; they needed a job and this was part of the application process, they received a commission from a wealthy or powerful patron, the church commissioned a major work, it was part of their studies, and on and on, etc.
The composition of art song very rarely falls under these categories, in fact, just as with the song recital as an art form, it’s usually done for more personal reasons born of love for the intimacy and the ‘directness’ of the form. Our program will celebrate inspiration by looking at three composers whose muses were very apparent and generous. We will hear songs from the ever practical Haydn who understood how to fit into the music scene in London in the 1790’s, while at the same time flattering his ‘Muse du jour’ (anyone but his wife it seems!). Schumann’s epic song cycle Dichterliebe follows, which is ‘musing’ defined in every sense of the word. And lastly, we present Strauss’ opulent 4 Songs, Opus 27, which he dedicated to his own personal muse Pauline de Ahna, on the occasion of their wedding in 1894. Join us for 100 years of Musings!
