We are delighted to announce two new faculty appointments to the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music this semester: Professor Robert Cutietta as Ong Teng Cheong Professor in Music and Associate Professor Eric Lamb as new Head of Winds, Brass & Percussion.
Flutist Eric Lamb is a versatile international classical musician known for his work as a soloist, chamber artist, guest principal, and educator. A former member of the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE), he has premiered over 200 contemporary works and appears on more than 15 albums. Also an Associate Professor and researcher in historical performance practice, Lamb focuses on 17th- and 18th-century flute repertoire and has taught at institutions such as the University of Auckland and the Gulda School of Music Vienna. He performs on both modern and historical flutes, including instruments by Tutz (Innsbruck).
Robert Alan Cutietta is a nationally and internationally recognized leader in music education, celebrated for his pioneering contributions to curriculum innovation, arts leadership, and the study of music’s impact on human development. Over two decades, he helped shape the future of arts education through transformative leadership, most notably as Dean of the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music (2002–2022), where he expanded interdisciplinary programs and embraced emerging technologies. He also served as the founding leader of the USC Kaufman School of Dance from 2015 to 2022, guiding it from concept to a top-tier conservatory. A former tenured professor at several major universities, he is now emeritus faculty at USC. An active electric bass player, he has composed Emmy-nominated music for film and TV, including Lost Legends of the West and Welcome Back Riders. He has authored seven books and over fifty scholarly articles on the cognitive and emotional effects of music, and is a sought-after speaker and advocate for the role of the arts in education.
We warmly welcome Professors Cutietta and Lamb to the YST community. Their exceptional artistry, scholarly insight, and leadership in both performance and education bring a wealth of experience that will deeply enrich our community. As we continue to grow as a leading conservatory in Asia and beyond, their presence signals an exciting new chapter—one that reflects our commitment to innovation, excellence, and global engagement in music.
