FACULTY

Assoc Prof Peter Edwards

Head of Composition

muspie@nus.edu.sg

Peter Ivan Edwards creates compositions on his own and in collaboration with other musicians. In his own works, he explores sound as a means to articulate energy, shape, narrative, and perspective. He employs computer-assisted and algorithmic means in the development of these works. The collaboratively created works stem from an experimental tradition wherein the general features are determined but the details are decided in performance. These works explore the use of signal processing to create new sounds and extended instruments as well as ways in which the computer can be an interactive partner in performance.

His works have been performed at festivals including Darmstadt Summer Courses (Germany), MATA Festival (New York), Donaueschinger Musiktage (Germany), Wien Modern (Austria), and June in Buffalo (New York). Additionally, his works have been premiered throughout the world by numerous performers and ensembles including Ensemble Interface (Frankfurt), Mutare Enemble (Frankfurt), Ensemble SurPlus (Freiburg), Ensemble Chronophonie (Freiburg), Ensemble Ascolta (Stuttgart), Ensemble Selisih (Freiburg), mmm… collective (Tokyo), red fish blue fish (San Diego), La Jolla Symphony, conductor Sian Edwards (UK), percussionists Max Riefer (Germany) and Aiyun Huang (Canada), contralto Noa Frenkel (Israel/Holland), kayageum player Heesun Kim (South Korea), trumpeter Stephen Altoft (UK/Germany), pianist Jongah Yoon (South Korea/Singapore), flutist Reiko Manabe (Japan), and guitarist Colin McAllister (USA).

As a member of the experimental trio Ang Mo Faux (2008-2013), Edwards performed at the Mosaic Festival (Singapore), the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory Chamber Music Festival (Singapore), the NetMusic 2013 Symposium (multiple cities throughout the world), the 2nd Performer’s Voice Symposium (Singapore), and the Silpakorn Festival (Bangkok Arts and Culture Center, Thailand).

As a member of Zero Crossing (2013-present), a percussion and electronics duo, Edwards has performed on the Spectra 2014 Electronic Music Festival (Malaysia) and the 40 Jahre Freiburger Schlagzeugensemble Jubiläumsveranstalung (Germany).

His debut CD Object Lessons is available on Albany Records. The mmm… collective released a recording of his Ascent: Two Perspectives as part of their 2011-12 Hibari Project. Stephen Altoft’s The Yasser Collection published by Microtonal Projects in 2011 includes a work by Edwards. In 2012, Ang Mo Faux released their CD titled Improvisations on the Palace of Lights label.

Edwards also remains active as a researcher. He has presented his research findings at the IRCAM Forum Workshops (Seoul/Paris), the Orpheus Institut (Belgium), the ACL Annual Conference 2007 (New Zealand), as well as at various universities and conservatories including the Royal Conservatory (The Hague, the Netherlands), University for Music and the Performing Arts (Vienna), Lübeck Musikhochschule (Lübeck, Germany), Hanyang University (Seoul), University of Suwon (South Korea), and LaSalle College of the Arts (Singapore). He has published his research findings in the journals Perspectives of New Music and Experiments in Pedagogy.

Edwards was born in New York and studied composition at Northwestern University; the University of California, San Diego; and the Folkwang Hochschule in Essen, Germany. His principal composition teachers were Chaya Czernowin and Nicolaus A. Huber.

At the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, Edwards teaches studio (major study) composition, collaborative composition, experimental music, and computer music. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Edwards is the director of the Dian Red Kechil International Young Composers Residency, hosted at the Conservatory. To enhance students’ opportunities and experiences, he also organises visits by major figures in contemporary music. These have included the TIMF Ensemble (South Korea), Elision Ensemble (UK/Australia), Ensemble Interface (Germany), guitarist Magnus Andersson (Sweden), clarinetist Carl Rosman (Australia/Germany), and composers Chaya Czernowin (Harvard University), Liza Lim (University of Huddersfield), Aaron Cassidy (University of Huddersfield), and Joshua Fineberg (Boston University).
