Armed with wide musical knowledge and versatility, Joachim Lim “performs with a razor-sharp edge” (The Straits Times) and quickly adapts to situations he is involved, from professional orchestra concerts to artist collaborations, from studio recordings to masterclasses, and even improvisational performances.

Graduating as Valedictorian, he attained First Class Honours from both the Peabody Institute and the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, proceeding to obtain his Masters degree from the former. His mentors include marimba virtuoso Robert van Sice, Tom Freer, and Ji Hye Jung.

Joachim also co-founded Morse Percussion, a percussion collective that aims to cultivate interest and education in percussion music, where they performed a sold-out show at the 2021 Singapore International Festival of Arts.

Apart from his Classical achievements, Joachim is also part of classical-crossover group, Lorong Boys. Their spontaneous performance on the trains one night in Singapore brought them overnight fame, and the success of the band has led them to perform for various notable events — President’s Star Charity (2015), two Concerto Grosso’s with the Orchestra of the Music Makers (2018) and the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (2022), as well as in Jakarta, Indonesia (2014, 2019) and Busan, South Korea (2019). Adding to that, Joachim is also percussionist with the TENG Ensemble — a collective that bridges Eastern and Western traditions, culminating in music that marries both traditional and contemporary.

Through these, and with a strong work ethic, Joachim has worked with many local talents including The Sam Willows, Inch Chua, Nathan Hartono, Tay Kewei, “Miss Lou” Peixin, Derrick Hoh and Alfred Sim.

Joachim is a Freer Percussion artist and currently serves as Artist Faculty, as well as Ensemble-in-Residence with the Lorong Boys, at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music.
