Orchestral Institute: Cross-Currents

February 14, 2026 7:30pm

YST Concert Hall
Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, 3 Conservatory Drive

Across the shifting boundaries between sky and sea, we are drawn to the moments where elements meet—where one world dissolves into another, and where motion emerges from stillness. Cross-currents invites us into these liminal realms, tracing music’s ability to inhabit the spaces in-between, and the journey a single current takes as it drifts into something vast beyond measure.

The evening opens with Debussy’s Syrinx, performed by YST Head of Winds, Brass & Percussion, Associate Professor Eric Lamb—a pivotal early 20th-Century work for solo flute, imbued with the tale of the mythical god Pan’s pursuit of the nymph Syrinx, and the quiet tragedy of her transformation. From this quietude, the third movement of Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 emerges, a work that blends bright-eyed innocence with profound introspection, offering a child’s vision of paradise—delicate and luminous, yet touched by subtle shadows. The currents then widen into Debussy’s La Mer, three symphonic sketches that evoke the endless expanse of the sea and its constant transformation.

On this Valentine’s evening, the YST Orchestral Institute invites you to drift between these worlds, where currents cross and emotions converge—not in declarations, but in the quiet, inexhaustible motion of sound.
