OpusNovus: Brot
April 14, 2026 • 7:30pm
YST Concert Hall
OpusNovus explores experimental approaches to notation and performance, anchored by John Cage’s landmark Concert for Piano and Orchestra (1957-58), a work of radical indeterminacy that reinvented the relationship between composer and performer. The evening takes its title from Enno Poppe’s Brot, an instrumental transformation of an aria from his opera Arbeit Nahrung Wohnung, where everyday sustenance becomes a portal into intricate sonic worlds. Peter Edwards’ Li Lo No investigates the boundaries between gesture and sound, while Polish composer Thomas Sikorski’s Diafornia (1973) creates haunting soundscapes through graphic notation and extended techniques. From Cage’s liberating unpredictability to contemporary experimentalism, the program celebrates music that expands our understanding of what a score can be.
