OpusNovus pays tribute to Isang Yun (1917–1995), whose music forged a deeply personal meeting point between East Asian thought and European modernism. The programme opens with Tapis, a finely woven field of string sound, and returns to Yun through the concentrated dialogue of his late Trio for Clarinet, Bassoon and Horn. Around them, Boulez’s rigorously constructed Structures and Kurtág’s aphoristic Microludes reveal contrasting faces of post-war modernism. Yun’s student Toshio Hosokawa offers the evening’s most direct act of remembrance in Memory: In Memory of Isang Yun, while Carola Bauckholt’s Schlammflocke II transforms animal calls and concrete sounds into unexpected instrumental colours.
