ABOUT THIS EVENT

Transfigurations: a concert celebrating transformation, from the YST Orchestral Institute

The YST Orchestral Institute under the direction of Principal Conductor Jason Lai, featuring Jonah Ryan Kwek Lim Jin (B.Mus3, Piano), presents a concert celebrating transformation and transfiguration. This concert with Jonah is also the first of our 2021-22 Concerto Competition Prizewinner Showcase series.

The spell of transfiguration is one that ennobles the human will, enabling a fearless and decisive shattering of boundaries—the illusory line between an artist and their art, life, and death. The composers featured on this evening’s programme were both 25 years of age and in the prime of their youth when they penned the works to be performed, each bringing decidedly different musical approaches to artistic and spiritual transformation.

In Richard Strauss’s Death and Transfiguration—specially arranged for this evening’s COVID era-sized orchestra by YST alumnus Christopher Sim (’21)—we join the protagonist in a deeply psychological journey, hurtling from the edge of death to the space beyond. Meanwhile, the journey of transformation in Johannes Brahms’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in D minor is one that you and I—as creative spirits—may more readily recognise: an endless striving for self-realisation in this life, finding the hope, strength and ultimately joy to confront and transcend ghosts and mirrors, real and imagined.
