Composition Seminar: On My Recent Compositions

20 January 5:00pm

Seminar Room 1
Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music

JASON BUCHANAN, presenter

ABOUT THE EVENT
As a composer, I am fascinated by the potential that technology offers for the manipulation of experiential time, as well as its influence on society, our perception, and the human condition. My work explores fragmentation, multiplicity, and intelligibility, leading to the development of a real-time audiovisual processing environment with increased emphasis on causality and clearly perceivable correlations between processes. Responding directly to performers’ physical actions through wearable technology, this environment augments the relationship between physical and digital realms. Notation that influences modes of behavior rather than prescribing singular events has provided increased creative freedom to the interpreter, creating musical spaces that are malleable and fluid. I am intrigued by the dialogue that takes place as discrete layers build a composite and contextualize one another, exploring relationships between individual layers. This lecture unpacks the development of my creative processes over the past five years, with a focus on my recent works for ensemble and technology including the multimedia opera Hunger (2014-15), walkside, lost (2015) for Slagwerk Den Haag, PANIC ARCHITECTURE (2017) for the Talea Ensemble, and all-forgetting-is-retrieval (2019) for ensemble and augmented conductor, exploring the formation of human memory, retrieval, and failure.
