Of Childhood and Correspondences
October 6, 2025 • 7:30pm
Steven Baxter Recital Studio
YST Faculty and pianist Frances Lee is joined by guest artist, writer Zhang Ruihe in this performance that brings together the fields of music and literature to explore our perceptions of childhood across different times and spaces.
Poetry and lyric prose from the newly released chapbook by Zhang will be presented alongside its original source of inspiration, Robert Schumann’s Scenes from Childhood, performed by pianist Frances Lee. Enriching this conversation will be Grażyna Bacewicz’s Children’s Suite.
Through this combination of works, Lee and Zhang will unfold their curatorial and artistic responses towards music from bygone centuries through the lens of present-day Singapore, and negotiate the tensions between youth and maturity, home and away, novelty and nostalgia, and past and present.
