Establishment of the Guy Hentsch Prize for Piano Performance

19 June 2021

YST is delighted to announce the Guy Hentsch Prize for Piano Performance, an endowed gift donated by Mr Geoffrey Yu and Dr Guy Hentsch. Established to recognise, encourage and further energise excellence in piano performance, the Prize is awarded annually to a graduating Bachelor of Music Piano student of the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music who has distinguished him/herself consistently (including in their Senior Recital), with an overall CAP of at least 4.0.

Dr Guy Hentsch is a former Swiss diplomat of 15 years, before a 22-year career at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva. He has lived in Singapore since 2007 and been an avid supporter of the arts in Singapore, creating platforms for young pianists to showcase their talent. Mr Geoffrey Yu has held a range of senior positions across the government and higher education sectors in Singapore as well as in the World Intellectual Property Organisation in Geneva.

Mr Yu shared, “It is our pleasure to celebrate the hard work and dedication of YST’s Piano students, and we are honoured by the opportunity to support their ongoing journey as artists and creators. We greatly admire what the YST Conservatory has accomplished in just a dozen years. It is today a top Asian music school, adding lustre to Singapore as a leading centre for the arts. Equally, the Conservatory is deeply anchored in local society, welcoming citizens and visitors to a wonderful range of creative performances. It teaches and shares with us, creates for us, and enriches our lives.”

Prof Dr Thomas Hecht, founding Head of Keyboard Studies at YST, says, “I am delighted that such an important prize is now established to identify and encourage the Conservatory’s top piano talent. I wish to express my deepest gratitude, both to Geoffrey for his astounding generosity and to Guy for his tireless efforts in supporting our piano performance majors over the years – both on and off stage.

The 2020 and 2021 awardees are Mervyn Lee Cheng Hui (’20 – delayed announcement due to COVID situation) and Chang Yun-Hua (’21) respectively. Mervyn is currently pursuing graduate studies at the Manhattan School of Music, and Yun-Hua will go on to pursue her graduate studies at the Northwestern Bienen School of Music.

Prof Bernard Lanskey, Dean of the YST Conservatory, shared, “We thank Guy and Geoffrey for their continued friendship and support over these years, from attending our events, to offering performance opportunities for young pianists at their home, and now taking it further with this wonderful gift which lends further support to our graduates’ aspirations.”
