Charting Pathways '21 - Pualina Lim

23 June 2021

PUALINA LIM ('21, Piano)

My chamber group WAN Trio went for the 2020 Musical Chairs Chamber Music Festival at the Schulich School of Music, McGill University in Canada! I remember being so inspired by the high calibre of daily performances and lessons there. I experienced how music transcends and connects everyone, even though we had just met and were all from different parts of the world. I thoroughly enjoyed working with my festival trio, where I collaborated with friends from the Norwegian Academy of Music and McGill – we still keep in touch!

Being able to play with the Conservatory Orchestra at the Concerto Competition 2020 Prizewinner Showcase was also a huge highlight. I felt a huge sense of joy and wonder when I heard the piano orchestral reduction come to life, and I will definitely treasure the rare opportunity to play with an orchestra. I am also very grateful to the school for fighting so hard for us to have this project come true amidst all the setbacks and COVID regulations.

I strongly believe it was the lessons and advice from many teachers and peers that have helped build me into the musician who I am today. I would like to specially thank my major teacher, Assoc Prof Albert Tiu, for his guidance, unwavering support and extra hours put in especially before performances or competitions.

Mr Lim Yan and Prof Bernard Lanskey have also played an instrumental role in my growth. I can’t quite remember the exact words, but Mr Lim Yan once said I should play like a performer, not just like a good student. That really struck me and was a pivotal moment of change and growth for me. Prof Lanskey helped to unleash a whole different world of ‘playing the piano’ for me – he taught me to truly listen and allow harmonies to be heard.

I am excited to be pursuing my Master of Music in Collaborative Piano at the New England Conservatory!

It may be tough, but this will help you to grow!
