Charting Pathways '21 - Man Gege

19 June 2021

MAN GEGE ('21, Double Bass)

Playing Ravel’s La Valse in the Conservatory Orchestra in 2018. I love the piece itself, but what made it even more special was Artist Fellow Mervin Wong’s beautiful multimedia visuals, the concert’s narrative, and the low lighting which created such an intimate atmosphere even for us as the musicians. I felt truly in the ambience and context of what we were trying to create. Conservatory Orchestra has also helped set the tone for me in preparing for professional standards, and always being fully prepared from the first rehearsal.

My major teacher, Mr Guennadi Mouzyka. He helped me improve my technique and pushed me to be even more musical and expressive, to sing through to the last row. He does it in such a caring, calm and effective way that helped build my confidence.

Assoc Prof Greg Petersen’s contextual studies class challenged me to think critically about art and opened my mind to different facets and styles. Dr Tony Makarome has also been incredibly inspiring with his rich talents and clear teaching!

Also, my batchmates and studiomates who inspire me all the time, and the staff who are always there to provide a safe space and support when you need them. Everyone being part of my musical journey has really made a difference for me.

I will be pursuing a Master of Music in Orchestral Studies (Double Bass) at the Tianjin Juilliard School.

In my last semester, I got to work with the Programming & Productions team doing stage managing, coordinating productions, as well as camera control and score reading for livestreams. I realised it is something I love and can see myself continuing to do in the future. It was also wonderful working with the team, who are so organised, knowledgeable and friendly. I couldn’t have asked for a better last semester, having gained this experience beyond my instrument!

In my first year I was shy both as a person and in my playing – I wasn’t expressing my ideas freely and convincingly. Over time, the teachers and peers here have really inspired me to be myself fully. I’ve become more open-minded and learned to embrace new experiences and surprises (whether wonderful or disappointing!).
