Charting Pathways '21 - Liu Yunbei

15 June 2021

LIU YUNBEI ('21, Cello)

The most significant performance that I worked on during the last four years was our Cello Studio Concert on 1 October 2019. The programme included cello solo, cello quartet and cello octet. I loved the feeling of performing on the stage and striving side by side with my studiomates; it was truly a unique and meaningful concert.

My experience in the Student Management Committee has also helped me improve greatly in my decision-making and become a better, more confident me. Thanks to all my teammates and the Student Life Office for helping me along the way!

I want to give the biggest thanks to our dearest teacher, Assoc Prof Qin Li-Wei. From planning and organising to rehearsing and performing alongside us on stage, he helped us along the way and gave us the strongest support and encouragement.
I would say my four years have been like Stravinsky’s Suite Italienne. This is also one of the reasons why I chose to play this piece in my senior recital. Just like the five interrelated movements, my university life has had its full share of happiness, tension, sadness, hard work, and celebration.
Over the ups and downs of the past year, COVID has had and continues to have a heavy impact. I’ve learned to accept and face challenges, and developed a positive attitude in solving difficulties. I still hope to continue furthering my studies and sharing my music live, as the pandemic situation improves.
Enjoy your life! You might get stuck, you might reap joy. Be it adversity or prosperity, embrace it!
