Charting Pathways '21 - Lee Yu Ru

LEE YU RU ('21, Percussion)

In Year 2, I went on tour with the Conservatory Orchestra where I was soloist in our premiere of Asst Prof Chen Zhangyi’s Triple Concerto for Erhu, Zhongruan, Percussion and Ensemble. As Dr Chen was composing the piece, he worked closely with us soloists to make sure the music was idiomatic for our traditional Chinese instruments, even as the material was complex and technically challenging. We performed the piece in two concerts, one in Singapore at the Esplanade and one at the Korea National University of Arts Hall in Korea. It was the highlight of my four years here – a fun, eye-opening and humbling experience, with a wonderful end product. I would like to thank my mentors in Chinese music (my musical background before coming to YST) Mr Quek Ling Kiong and Ms Cheryl Ong, my major teacher Dr Jonathan Fox (who gave input on my phraseology across both the Western and Chinese music parts), and all the performers who helped bring it together.

I’m grateful for the Percussion studio environment, with amazing teachers (my major teacher Dr Jon Fox, Zhu Zhengyi and Joachim Lim) and seniors who inspire me to push myself and become even better every day, and juniors who inspire me to be a better musician and senior to them.

I will be pursuing my Master’s at YST. Performance remains my passion and I am also preparing for orchestra auditions, alongside looking into teaching.

I got into music through video games, and my dream would be to work in a recording orchestra that records video game music!

Over the past four years, I’ve become more detail-oriented. The approach to practice that Dr Jon Fox taught us was that every single detail, whether it’s four bars or one note, has to be executed consistently. Often in some orchestral works, we might only have one note to play in an entire symphony, or 20 minutes in an entire opera – and we have to nail it every single time in the same way. This focus on detail has translated into being meticulous and consistent in other aspects of my daily life too!

In the past year, I’ve become more appreciative of the privileges we have as students – from instrument access (very missed during lockdown!) to the space to just focus on our own growth and development.
