Charting Pathways '21 - Eriko Miyagawa

ERIKO MIYAGAWA ('21, Violin)

A significant project for me would definitely be my senior recital. I really wanted it to be a meaningful personal achievement before I graduate from YST, and chose repertoire that would strongly challenge me.

My violin major teacher, Prof Qian Zhou, and accompanist Ge Xiaozhe always inspired me to make better music and brush up my performance. I’m really honoured to have studied under her, and enjoyed playing with him. I also have to mention Instructor Oleksandr Korniev – when I had trouble with my playing, he always gave me good advice that helped me a lot. Throughout, my friends also helped me cheer up during difficult times. Without all these people, I don’t think I could have achieved what I have so far.

Each of the Conservatory Orchestra projects have been memorable for me, but our Korea tour was especially outstanding. It was my first experience playing with Prof Qian Zhou, who was soloist in Walton’s Violin Concerto accompanied by us, as well as going overseas with my schoolmates. I really thank YST for having me in this project – it was just great!!

One quote I remember from Prof Qian Zhou is “Tell the story of the music and sing through the score.” In each lesson, she told me how important it is to play musically and speak to the audience with our music, not just trying to play perfectly – something that is very true but also challenging for students to achieve. Over these four years, I have worked hard to focus on the music foremost, and I believe it has made me a better musician.
