Charting Pathways '21 - Caleb Yoong

CALEB YOONG ('21, Audio Arts & Sciences)

A significant project would be Riverlife Church’s upcoming live album Behold – the first full-length album that I am working on – where I’ve been responsible for the live recording equipment and setup, and the post-production editing. I have been involved in the songwriting and pre-production process as a musician and audio engineer, even before the decision to make an album was made. From songwriting retreats to bringing the songs to life in demo recordings, I have enjoyed collaborating with the musicians and songwriters. With this being a live album, it is also much more difficult than a regular studio album. As such, it’s been exciting to push myself to do something that I have not done before and use the experience gained in YST to add tangible value to the production.

One of the most significant people who helped me in this process is Jerry Chua, the mix and mastering engineer for this project. His advice from years of experience in the industry has helped me to avoid potential problems in the live recording setup, be deliberate in every decision, and be the best version of myself that I can be.

Graduating amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, I plan to pursue my love of engineering and technology and its relation to music and everyday life. I hope to apply for a part-time remote Masters in Computer Science program, while continuing to freelance to provide recording services. I currently work part-time at Creator’s Solutions, an audiovisual installation and events company where I previously interned.

1. You have no idea how you’re going to get to where you want to be, and that’s okay. Even after four years I still have no idea what the future has in store.

2. In three years there will be a once-a-century global pandemic. Your love for technology, computers and engineering is worth exploring and pursuing NOW beyond watching the occasional YouTube video, and is a very good way to expand your portfolio and skills.

3. Buy Gamestop shares before 2020. In all seriousness, life changes quickly and unpredictably and there’s always a constant pressure to adapt and be ahead of things. Do things you really love for leisure outside of music. Your physical and mental health will thank you for that.
