Announcing the Geoffrey SK Yu Prize for Cello Performance

28 April 2024

YST is delighted to announce the Geoffrey SK Yu Prize for Cello Performance, a new endowed gift donated by Mr Geoffrey Yu. Established to recognise and energise excellence in cello performance, the Prize is awarded annually to a graduating Bachelor of Music Cello student of the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music who has distinguished themselves in performance across their studies, while maintaining good overall academic performance.

Mr Geoffrey Yu (FASS ’69) has been a passionate benefactor of the Conservatory, previously donating to establish the Guy Hentsch Prize for Piano Performance. He held the role of Senior Specialist Advisor in the Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Singapore Ministry of Law, and was also Deputy Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Intellectual Property Academy of Singapore, Adjunct Senior Fellow at the NTU Rajaratnam School of International Studies, and Adjunct Professor at the NUS Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy. Prior to these appointments in Singapore, he was Deputy Director General at the World Intellectual Property Organisation, Geneva.

Mr Yu shared, “As a long-time supporter of YST, it has been a delight to journey with the Conservatory and witness the growth of its talented students. I hope the Prize can be an encouragement to young musicians at the culmination of their undergraduate studies, as they embark on their exciting professional and artistic journeys ahead.”

Prof Peter Tornquist, Dean of the YST Conservatory, shared, “On behalf of the Conservatory, I express my deepest gratitude to Geoffrey for his generous gift and his continuing support for YST. We are truly excited for this prize which serves as a recognition for our top cello graduates for their hard work, and cheers them on in their next steps as they continue to do us proud.”
