YST piano performance majors will delight museum audiences with masterworks from the solo piano repertoire. The Conservatory is grateful for Mr Tan Kah Tee for his gift of a Bösendorfer Johann Strauss Model.
The twentieth-century witnessed the rapid evolution of solo artistry for brass instrumentalists. This was particularly true for the tuba, which as a solo instrument had no significant solo repertoire composed for it before 1950. Tubists such as Roger Bobo from the USA, John Fletcher from the UK, and Michel Lind from Sweden, demonstrated the virtuosity possible on the solo tuba, while two of Øystein Baassvik’s primary mentors—Arnold Jacobs and Harvey Phillips—became revolutionary promoters of the instrument in the areas of pedagogy, and in dramatically expanding the solo repertoire for the instrument, respectively. |

When Sir Stamford Raffles landed in Singapore in 1819, he set in motion processes which led to it becoming one of Southeast Asia’s most successful nations, as well as a musical powerhouse in the region and the world. In this forum presentation, Marc Rochester looks at how Western music first came to Singapore, and how Singapore has added its own unique style to an art form which is more usually associated with nations with histories longer than 200 years. |

This concert will explore the creative genius and diverse output of the Austrian composer Joseph Haydn. Regularly known as the "Father of the String Quartet", Haydn's innovative and ambitious Op. 76 represents the culmination of an instrumentation that he helped popularise into its modern form. At the same time, no commemoration of Haydn can be complete without showcasing his piano music, which will be performed on a Fortepiano built by Paul McNulty based on instruments by the Viennese instrument maker Walter & Sohn from the late 18th century. The evening will then culminate in a performance of Haydn's "Mass in Time of War", which was written towards the end of the French Revolution, and is often cited as containing anti-war sentiments and messages of peace. There will be a pre-concert event, Sculptures Launch: A Conversation with Mr Chong Fahcheong. Click to learn more. |

While Robert Schumann is known for his compositions, he also created revolutions in piano education. Instead of the dry technical exercises common in piano instruction books of the 19th century, Schumann brought forth his Album for the Young that illuminated the hearts of the young and transformed their imaginative world - yet this work and the pedagogical philosophy behind it are often overlooked. This workshop examines Schumann’s didactic principles, which have greatly impacted piano education for over two centuries and in today’s teaching.

This piece is motivated by the interaction in musical interplay between a computer and performer –– performer-controlled and controlled-performer. In a form that is familiar, an instrument controlled by a performer would be classified as a performance-controlled interface, in which the performer has the ability to exercise sentient thought and produce calculated decisions on the physical/digital interaction between him/her-self and the instrument. In that scenario, the instrument produces acoustical feedback that results in the performer adapting (to whatever degree) to the instrument.
