ABOUT THE PRESENTERS

Dr. Albi Odendaal is associate professor in Music Education in the School of Music at the North-West University in South Africa. He is also a docent at the Sibelius Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki and an Associate Senior Research Fellow at the Sir Zelman School of Music and Performance at Monash University. His research interests include psychology of music, music education, memory, and music teacher education.

Dr. Kathryn Ang is an Extraordinary Researcher in the Research Niche Area: Musical Arts in South Africa: Resources and Applications at the North-West University in South Africa. She is also a music educator, teaching piano performance and pedagogy at the diploma, pre-university, and tertiary levels. She is a frequent adjudicator at piano competitions and performs as a collaborative pianist. Her research interests include music education, piano didactics, and music teacher education.

Dr. Khoo Hui Ling is a pianist, music educator, researcher and entrepreneur who maintains diverse interests in life that nourish her artistic soul. She is currently Lecturer at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music (YST) and Founder of The Music Studios where she mentors piano teachers and students. Having a strong conviction to positively impact the music teaching community, she serves as the Vice President of the Singapore Music Teachers’ Association and Secretary of the Southeast Asian Directors of Music (SEADOM).

ABOUT THIS EVENT

‘Understanding, Preventing and Overcoming Musical Inhibition’ is an interactive webinar conducted by music education researchers and pedagogues Albi Odendaal, Kathryn Ang and Khoo Hui Ling. It shares recent research the team conducted on the inhibition of musicality and invites discussion between music teachers, parents and students. This event is part of The Singapore Music Teachers’ Association Coffee Talk sessions,  hosted via Zoom on 29th March, 8pm GMT+8. Register for this event here.

The Learning Curve is an ongoing series led by Khoo Hui Ling exploring challenging aspects of teaching and learning in music education. It is a discussion not just for educators, but for students and parents too; it tackles issues music educators may confront, raises questions students can reflect on and discusses decisions that parents often struggle with.
