YST Piano Academy 2018


Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music is pleased to announce the YST PIANO ACADEMY 2018 which invites outstanding young piano talents to Singapore for a three-day workshop focused on the preparation of conservatory-level piano auditions. The intensive training course is open to prospective students ages 16 to 18 of all nationalities (Singaporean male students may apply if they are completing National Service by 2018). Academy participants will be featured in specialised public masterclasses, a final concert and in daily lessons with YST's distinguished piano faculty, Professor Thomas Hecht and Associate Professor Albert Tiu.

The 12 students selected to perform in the academy must offer three selections from among the following repertoire groups:

Set A Any etude by Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninov, Debussy, Scriabin, Bartok, Stravinsky, Moszkowski, Prokofiev, Ligeti or Bolcom
Set B Any Prelude & Fugue from The Well Tempered Clavier by J.S. Bach
Set C A Sonata movement by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, or Clementi
Set D A major work from the Romantic period
Set E A work from the 20th century to the present

Applicants are also required to submit the following:

(1) Three video recordings *
(2) One recommendation letter from the applicant’s current piano teacher
(3) A list of repertoire performed and/or learnt by the applicant over the past three years
(4) A photocopy of the applicant’s passport or identity card.

Upload all the above materials electronically via an accessible online link e.g. Google Drive, Dropbox or other available accessible platforms online and email us the link to ystprojects@nus.edu.sg with the subject heading “YST Piano Academy 2018 – Your Name".

* Each piece or movement should be recorded and uploaded separately, labelling each file clearly with the composer and title. For consistency, ensure that each piece is a high quality, unedited recording performed in one sitting using the same grand piano & venue.


There is no application fee. However, applicants accepted into the academy are required to pay a course fee of SGD300 which will cover all workshop expenses and lunch for three days. Payment may be made in cash at YST or by cheque addressed to “National University of Singapore”. Accommodation will be at the applicant’s own arrangement and expense.
