SUMMARY:Orchestral Institute Plays Shostakovich\, Haydn & Pärt
DESCRIPTION:Round off the 2025/26 season with the YST Orchestral Institute in a programme that spans centuries and styles—from Shostakovich’s searing intensity and moral complexity\, to Haydn’s classical brilliance\, and Pärt’s luminous stillness. \nThe concert opens with Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5\, composed amid political turmoil and long heard as a work of dual meanings—its public gestures of triumph shot through with an unmistakable undercurrent of impassioned struggle. Haydn’s Symphony No. 100 (“Military”) follows\, delighting with its bold fanfares\, playful contrasts\, and vivid orchestral colour\, showcasing the composer’s wit and imagination at the height of his London years. \nThe evening concludes with Pärt’s Fratres for winds\, strings\, and percussion—a contemplative\, meditative work of shimmering textures and spiritual resonance that invites listeners into a timeless sound world. \nUnder the baton of Principal Conductor Jason Lai\, join us at the Esplanade Concert Hall for this season finale\, celebrating the versatility of the orchestra and the enduring power of music across time and tradition. \n  \nPROGRAMME \nYST ORCHESTRAL INSTITUTEwithJASON LAI\, conductor \nJOSEPH HAYDNSymphony No. 100 in G Major (“Military”) <1793> \nARVO PÄRTFratres (Winds\, Strings & Percussion) <1977; rev. 2007> \nDMITRI SHOSTAKOVICHSymphony No. 5 in D minor\, Op. 47 <1937> \n  \nTICKETING INFORMATION \nTickets from $15-50 via SISTIC. \nPatrons without valid tickets will not be allowed entry. SUMMARY:OpusNovus: Brot
DESCRIPTION:What does a score tell a performer — and what does it leave unsaid? OpusNovus takes its title from Enno Poppe’s Brot\, an instrumental reimagining of an aria from his opera Arbeit Nahrung Wohnung\, where the mundane becomes a doorway into intricate sonic worlds. Thomas Sikorski’s Diafornia (1973) builds its hypnotic landscape from repetition and restraint\, while Younghi Pagh-Paan’s Silbersaiten II pushes gesture and resonance to expressive extremes. Peter Edwards’ Li Lo No closes the evening by probing the threshold between movement and sound. The program closes with Louis Andriessen’s landmark Workers Union (1975)\, a work of radical indeterminacy that redistributes authority between composer and performers. Together\, these works map the outer edges of what notation can be — and what music can do when it steps beyond the page. \n  \nPROGRAMME \nENNO POPPEBrot \nLIN SHU-YU (BMus3)\, hornYEH TSUNG-RUEI (BMus3)\, trumpetZHU JIANYU (BMus3)\, tromboneISABEL CHIN CHUN EN\, percussionMI MAW LI AWNG (BMus3)\, piano \nTHOMAS SIKORSKIDiafornia \nXIE LINGFEI (BMus3)\, pianoMI MAW LI AWNG (BMus3)\, piano \nYOUNGHI PAGH-PAANSilbersaiten II \nHAYDEN CHUNG-HEI BUTT (BMus3)\, clarinetXIE LINGFEI (BMus3)\, pianoLIU YUBIN (BMus3)\, cello \nPETER EDWARDSLi Lo No \nLIN SIN-YUE (BMus3)\, pianoSYU CHENG-YI (BMus3)\, violinLIU YUBIN (BMus3)\, cello \nLOUIS ANDRIESSENWorkers Union \nLAZUTINA ANNA VLADIMIROVNA (BMus2)\, fluteHAYDEN CHUNG-HEI BUTT (BMus3)\, clarinetWEN XIYU (BMus3)\, bassoonLIN SHU-YU (BMus3)\, hornTSENG HUA-CHIH (BMus3)\, hornYEH TSUNG-RUEI (BMus3)\, trumpetZHU JIANYU (BMus3)\, tromboneLIM JUN YI (BMus3)\, tubaKUO YAN-SHIN (BMus3)\, percussionISABEL CHIN CHUN EN (BMus3)\, percussionXIE LINGFEI (BMus3)\, pianoPENG YIYANG (BMus3)\, violinSUN ZHENYAO (BMus3)\, violinLU MINA (BMus3)\, viola \n  \nTICKETING INFORMATION \nAdmission is free and on a first-come\, first-served basis.
