SUMMARY:Nusa Swara
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by their collaborative teaching of YST’s World Music Ensemble course\, “Nusa Swara” (Island Voices) is presented by Syafiqah ‘Adha and Rosemainy Buang and explores the creation of new music by harnessing sounds of the Nusantara/Malay world with technology. Through their collaboration\, Syafiqah and Rose will uncover novel musical expressions from the convergence and collision of traditional and contemporary elements from each of their own musical background and expertise. Their music will also explore themes of customs and rituals\, home\, identity and womanhood. \nABOUT SYAFIQAH ‘ADHASyafiqah ‘Adha is a prominent figure in Singapore’s music scene as a composer\, a traditional Malay music accordionist and an educator. While formally trained in the genre of contemporary classical music\, Syafiqah emerges as a versatile composer. Her creative aesthetic is a unique voice that stems from her foundations as a classical-trained musician and a traditional Malay music practitioner. Syafiqah often engages in collaborative multi-disciplinary and intercultural works to expand her creative output and find new meanings in collective musical expressions. \nABOUT ROSEMAINY BUANGRosemainy Buang is a Singaporean gamelan musician\, educator\, composer and sound artist who\, with over a decade of gamelan training\, continues to broaden her creative horizons through interdisciplinary collaborations\, approaching art-making with a multi-disciplinary and experimental spirit that seeks to question\, build upon\, and expand the limits of traditional soundscapes\, philosophies and aesthetics. \n \nSYAFIQAH ‘ADHAROSEMAINY BUANGYST WORLD MUSIC ENSEMBLE\nTICKETING INFORMATION \nFree with registration via yst.eventbrite.com \nPatrons without valid tickets will not be allowed entry. SUMMARY:MCP Capstone: Sounding our Shores: A Documentary-Concert on Singapore’s Coastal Memories
DESCRIPTION:Who are the indigenous peoples of Singapore? The Orang Laut have inhabited the waters and coastlines of the Singapore Strait for centuries — yet their histories remain largely absent from our national story. Once central to the region’s maritime trade and ecology\, their communities have been profoundly displaced by modernisation and land reclamation\, their ways of life eroding alongside the shorelines themselves.\n \nDrawing on filmed\, on-location interviews and performances with community members\, this documentary-concert explores how music functions as a living form of knowledge.\n \nSingapore’s coastline has been radically transformed over decades of reclamation and redevelopment. This project asks what is lost when physical spaces disappear\, and whether music might hold what history books do not.\n \nFor Singaporean audiences\, it is an invitation to reckon with a maritime past that is closer than it seems\, and to consider the communities and knowledge that have quietly persisted at the edges of the national story.\n  \nTICKETING INFORMATION \nAdmission is free with registration via Eventbrite. \nOut of respect for all patrons\, late admission will only be allowed at suitable intervals. No children under 6 years of age will be allowed admission. Food and drinks are not allowed inside the venue. Patrons are strongly advised to be seated 15 minutes before the performance start time. \nTo ensure an enjoyable experience for all\, venue staff may request audiences to step outside the venue if they disrupt the performance. \nBe the first to hear about our upcoming events! SUMMARY:MCP Capstone: Shadowed Encounters
DESCRIPTION:Follow guzheng player Xin Tong as she encounters the global cousins of her instrument\, seeking not just the music of the zither\, but the spirit of the people who play them. The performance brings these human connections to the stage\, where she discovers the music and people behind the Japanese Koto\, the Finnish Kantele\, and the Persian Qanun. \nAs she encounters these musicians\, she picks up new aesthetics for her instrument. The Guzheng\, originally playing traditional Chinese music\, is reconfigured to embrace new styles inspired by these meetings. \nThe resulting performance is a living archive of these encounters – we are the sum of the people who have guided us\, and every note we strike carries the shadow of a friend and mentor. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nPROGRAMME \n\n\n\n\nCHAN XIN TONG (BMus4)\, guzheng/presenterKITAI SAEKO\, koto WU ZHI YUN\, kotoAURORA FUSTINONI\, kanteleSARA MAJIDI NEJAD\, qanun \n\n\n\n\n  \nTICKETING INFORMATION \nAdmission is free with registration via Eventbrite. \nOut of respect for all patrons\, late admission will only be allowed at suitable intervals.
