The YST Double Reed faculty will be joined by an international list of guest artists. \nThe Bassoonion from Hong Kong presents a half-hour performance. \nABOUT THE ARTIST\nFounded in 2005\, The Bassoonion is the first-ever bassoon ensemble group established in Hong Kong. Its mission is to promote the bassoon to the general public and enhance their musical appreciation and knowledge of bassoon music through performances and academic workshops. The core members have received professional music training and graduated from world-renowned music institutions and conservatories in Europe and the United States\, and are active in professional orchestras in Hong Kong and Macau. \nThe Bassoonion has presented concerts at the main venues in Hong Kong. Overseas engagements include recitals in Granada (Spain) and Tokyo (Japan)\, invited by the International Double Reed Society in 2018 and 2015\, performance at the 2nd Asian Double Reed Conference in Chiayi (Taiwan) in 2013\, as well as a recital with the Thailand Double Reed Club in Bangkok (Thailand) in 2016. During his time there he studied chamber music with the Chilingirian Quartet and members of the Juilliard and Cleveland Quartets. \nAfter beginning his career in the Singapore Symphony Orchestra\, Chian returned to the UK and began what quickly became a successful period working as a freelance viola player. As an active chamber musician\, he plays regularly with various groups including the Marias Ensemble and was a member of the Dowdeswell Piano Quartet. Chian has broadcast with the Endymion Ensemble and Lontano on BBC Radio 3 and has also performed at the Wigmore Hall on numerous occasions with various chamber ensembles including the Guildhall Strings.  \nHe was Principal Viola with Glyndebourne on Tour Orchestra and has played Guest Principal Viola with City of London Sinfonia\, Royal Ballet Sinfonia and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. He plays regularly with English Chamber Orchestra and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields with whom he has recorded and performed worldwide with esteemed musicians such as Julian Rachlin\, Joshua Bell\, Gil Shaham and Murray Perahia. At its core is the investigation of musical sources and the performance of works by Portuguese authors or residents in Portugal during the 19th century. Most of these authors\, poets and composers\, are unknown. In this concert\, popular music and popular lyrics as well as more educated music\, were adapted to voice and keyboard during the late 19th century and published in the city of Porto. Few examples of these publications still exist today. We aim to perform this music for the 21st century public and to bring back memories of the songs that we heard from our grandparents. The repertoire of the concert includes works from the CDs released in 2017 and 2019. She began her training at Tokyo’s Toho Gakuen School of Music and soon after went to the United States\, where she studied at the Juilliard School and Yale University. She won the highest prize at both the Geneva International Music Competition and the ARD International Music Competition in Munich. \nAs a chamber musician\, Nobuko Imai has worked with artists such as Martha Argerich\, Kyung-Wha Chung\, Heinz Holliger\, Mischa Maisky\, Midori\, Murray Perahia\, Gidon Kremer\, Yo-Yo Ma\, Itzhak Perlman\, András Schiff\, Isaac Stern\, and Pinchas Zukerman. She has appeared with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra\, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra\, Vienna Symphony Orchestra\, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra\, London Symphony Orchestra\, BBC Symphony Orchestra\, Boston Symphony Orchestra\, and Chicago Symphony Orchestra. She is a former member of the Vermeer Quartet and is the founder and a member of the Michelangelo String Quartet\, where she performs together with Mihaela Martin\, Daniel Austrich\, and Frans Helmerson. \nBetween 1983 and 2003 Nobuko Imai taught at the Hochschule für Musik Detmold.
