SUMMARY:Soundbites: Dawn by Cao Huiying
DESCRIPTION:CAO HUIYING (B.Mus3)\, celloLIU JIA\, piano \nPROGRAMME \nSERGEI RACHMANINOFFSonata in G minor for Cello and Piano\, Op. 19I. Lento – Allegro moderatoII. Allegro scherzandoIII. AndanteIV. Allegro mossoVocalise in E minor\, Op. 34\, No. 14 \nABOUT THIS EVENT \nThis event was held to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Sergei Rachmaninoff’s birth\, which consists of his iconic works for cello and piano. \nThe Sonata in G Minor was composed in 1901\, the same year as his piano concerto No.2. Rachmaninoff dedicated this work to Russian cellist Anatoliy Brandukov\, who gave the first performance in Moscow with the composer himself. However\, Rachmaninoff did not consider the piece to be a sonata for cello and piano. The majority of the themes begin with the piano and then are extended by the cello\, which is why it is more ofterly known as sonata for the cello and piano. \nThe Vocalise was composed in 1915 as the last of his 14 Songs or 14 Romances\, Op.34. It was originally written for high voice with piano accompaniment\, without any words. Rachmaninoff dedicated to soprano singer Antonina Nezhdanova. It has variations for different instrumental combinations. \nAbout “Dawn” \nDawn is the arrival of hope. In my perspective\, music is the dawn for Rachmaninoff. When the sun rises\, a new day begins… \nClouds move\, birds sing… \nTICKETING INFORMATION \nFree Admission. \nOut of respect for other concertgoers\, no children under 6 years of age will be allowed admission. \n* All event information is correct at time of print. \nSubscribe to YST’s mailing list.

SUMMARY:Soundbites: Alexander Schimpf Piano Recital
DESCRIPTION:PROGRAMME \nMOZARTRondo in A minor\, K. 511 \nBEETHOVENPiano Sonata No. 4 in E-flat major\, Op. 7I. Allegro molto e con brioII. Largo con gran espressioneIII. AllegroIV. Rondo: Poco allegretto e grazioso \nSCHUBERTSix moments musicaux\, D. 780I. ModeratoII. AndantinoIII. Allegro moderatoIV. ModeratoV. Allegro vivaceVI. Allegretto \nABOUT THIS EVENT \nVisiting Artist Alexander Schimpf presents three important musical statements from the Vienna Classical era: the late\, philosophical Rondo K. 511 by Mozart\, the early Beethoven’s revolutionary Sonata op. 7\, and Schubert’s both popular and enigmatic “Moments musicaux” which already mark a transition to the romantic style. \nFollowing his success in renowned competitions in Bonn (German Music Competition 2008)\, Vienna (1st prize International Beethoven Competition 2009) and Cleveland/USA (1st prize Cleveland International Piano Competition 2011)\, German pianist Alexander Schimpf was able to establish himself as a sought after soloist on several continents. Invitations to solo recitals and performances with orchestras led him to perform in most major concert halls in Germany as well as in New York City\, Boston\, Washington D.C.\, Chicago\, Paris\, Vienna\, St. Petersburg\, Madrid\, Beijing\, and Taipei. In 2016 he was appointed professor for piano at the HMTM Hannover. Since then he was regularly invited to give masterclasses in Germany\, France\, Italy\, the US\, China\, Taiwan\, and Vietnam. \nTICKETING INFORMATION \nFree Admission. \nOut of respect for other concertgoers\, no children under 6 years of age will be allowed admission. \n* All event information is correct at time of print. \nSubscribe to YST’s mailing list.

Vivace \nSTUTSCHEWSKYHassidic Suite \nRACHMANINOVSonata for Cello and Piano in G Minor\, Op. 19I. LentoII. Allegro scherzandoIII. AndanteIV. Allegro mosso \nABOUT THIS EVENT \nVisiting Artist Amit Peled performs in recital. \nPraised by The Strad magazine and The New York Times\, internationally renowned cellist Amit Peled is acclaimed as one of the most exciting and virtuosic instrumentalists on the concert stage today. Having performed in many of the world’s most prestigious venues\, including Carnegie Hall and Alice Tully Hall at the Lincoln Center in New York\, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C.\, Salle Gaveau in Paris\, Wigmore Hall in London\, and the Konzerthaus Berlin\, Peled has released over a dozen recordings on the Naxos\, Centaur\, Delos\, and CTM Classics labels. Musical America named Peled one of the Top 30 Influencers of 2015.Recent career highlights include Bach Suite cycles in the United States\, Europe\, and Israel; performances of the Saint-Saëns Cello Concerto at the Kennedy Center; a debut collaboration with the Peabody Chamber Orchestra led by Maestra Marin Alsop; a return to the Ravinia Festival in celebration of Peled’s recording of the Brahms Cello Sonatas on the Goffriller cello (1733) once owned by the legendary cellist Pablo Casals; a return visit as a soloist to the Casals Festival in Puerto Rico; performances of the Shostakovich Cello Concerto and Penderecki’s Second Cello Concerto conducted by the legendary Krzysztof Penderecki himself; Schubert’s Arpeggione Sonata recorded on the Casals cello; and a worldwide musical celebration of Beethoven’s Sonatas for Cello and Piano to commemorate the composer’s 250th anniversary. An enthusiastic chamber music artist\, Peled is a member of the acclaimed Tempest Trio with violinist Ilya Kaler and pianist Alon Goldstein. Peled also performs with Goldstein and clarinetist Alexander Fiterstein as a member of the Goldstein-Peled-Fiterstein Trio. One of the most sought-after cello professors in the world\, Peled is a professor at the Peabody Institute at Johns Hopkins University where he has taught since 2003 and was one of the youngest professors ever hired by a major conservatory. He has instructed students who have gone on to garner top prizes at international competitions such as the Carlos Prieto International Competition in Mexico\, the Schoenefeld International Competition in China\, and Young Concert Artists Guild in New York. Embracing the new era of the pandemic\, Peled recently established the Amit Peled Online Cello Academy in order to reach cellists all over the world with private lessons and in-depth courses on his First Hour technique method.Passing on the tradition in which he performed with his mentors Bernard Greenhouse and Boris Pergamenschikow\, Peled regularly performs with the Amit Peled Cello Gang. Composed of students from Peled’s studio at the Peabody Institute\, members of the Cello Gang range in age from undergraduate freshmen to second year master’s students. Peled and the Cello Gang tour regularly around the country with recent performances at the Cape Cod Chamber Music Festival\, the Society of Four Arts in Palm Beach\, the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra\, as a resident ensemble in San Miguel de Allende\, Mexico\, and all across Maryland\, the gang’s home state. Peled is also the founder\, conductor\, and artistic director of the Mount Vernon Virtuosi\, a chamber orchestra dedicated to nurturing the careers of recently graduated music students\, which annually performs a four-program season in Baltimore\, Silver Spring\, and Rockville\, Maryland.Raised on a kibbutz in Israel\, Amit Peled began playing the cello at age 10. From 2012 through 2018\, Peled performed on the Pablo Casals 1733 Goffriller cello\, which was loaned to him personally by Casals’ widow\, Marta Casals Istomin.Amit Peled is represented worldwide by CTM Classics. \nSubscribe to YST’s mailing list. \nTICKETING INFORMATION \nFree admission. \nOut of respect for other concertgoers\, no children under 6 years of age will be allowed admission. \n* All event information is correct at time of print.

SUMMARY:Beyond the Score: The Practical Impact of Musicians in Non-Music Spaces
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THIS EVENT \nBeyond the Score is a capstone project by final year MS/MCP students Matthias Oh and Evan Xia. This symposium aims to provide participants with an opportunity to comprehensively understand and appreciate the practical impacts of music and its contributions to many other facets in society outside the music scene. The objective of the one-day symposium is to showcase a pool of knowledge and insights based on the experience of invited guest speakers regarding “non-music” areas that involve community engagement and societal contributions by musicians. \nTargeted at student musicians or musically inclined individuals with a keen interest in contributing to society through music\, this symposium endeavours to help the participants realise the vast potential of bringing their musical identities beyond their own instruments or technical practice. Hence\, titling it “Beyond the Score” provides a simple but clear idea of the intention behind the entire knowledge-sharing session. \nIf you’re interested in music and how it can build meaningful connections and innovative opportunities in other industries of society\, this symposium is for you! \nInstagram: @Beyond.thescoreTelegram channel: @Beyond_thescore \nSubscribe to YST’s mailing list. \nTICKETING INFORMATION \nFree admission with compulsory registration. \n* All event information is correct at time of print.
