We sense this especially when thinking of our artist-heroes. Every detail surrounding their demise\, every “last\,” becomes evermore noteworthy — their last days\, last words\, last works. \nOften\, we are moved by the profundity of composers’ final works\, prompting us to ponder: Did they sense the approaching end? Did they sense a ‘beyond’? \nConcluding a season of “Flowing Resonances” and 20th Anniversary celebrations\, join us for an exquisite hour of “Sunset Cavatine”— little songs that capture the bittersweet and heart-wrenchingly confessional moments of life’s farewells. As we reflect on the journey thus far\, much has come to past\, yet an equal measure of anticipation awaits. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSubscribe to YST’s mailing list. \nTICKETING INFORMATION \n$10 via Eventbrite. \nOut of respect for the participants and other spectators\, no children under 6 years of age will be allowed admission. \n*All event information is correct at the time of print.

Telemann’s Donnerode (Thunder cantata)\, written in response to the great Lisbon earthquake of 1755\, reflects the optimism of rebuilding and renewal while dramatically illustrating the immense power of God. Bach’s Easter Oratorio begins with celebration of the discovery of the empty tomb and what that signifies for the world in terms of renewal and rebirth. Rounding out the programme is Bach’s ever-popular Orchestral Suite No. 3\, performed with a resplendent band of period instruments including baroque trumpets\, oboes and timpani. \nJoining the voice majors and alumni again in this performance is Red Dot Baroque\, led by Artistic Director Alan Choo from the violin. Students from the Orchestral Institute perform side-by-side with members of Red Dot Baroque in a unique mentoring programme on baroque performance practice\, as part of RDB’s Ensemble-in-Residence offerings at YST. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSubscribe to YST’s mailing list. \nTICKETING INFORMATION \n$10 via Eventbrite. \nOut of respect for the participants and other spectators\, no children under 6 years of age will be allowed admission. \n*All event information is correct at the time of print.

EDWARDS (*1973)Zeuvi (2022) \nABOUT THIS EVENT \nThe duo „les éclats du son“ was founded in 2002 by pianist Sebastian Voltz and percussionistMax Riefer. Initially conceptualized as a duo\, the ensemble grew to an octet over the years. Manyof the first projects were actualized in cooperation with the public radio station SaarlandBroadcasting Saarbrücken\, notably a portrait concert of British composer James Clarke in 2006and a concert dedicated to Claude Vivier’s 60s birthday in 2008. First international performancesfollowed at festivals such as „Two days and two nights of new music“ in Odessa (Ukraine) or the„Soundways Festival“ in St. Petersburg (Russia). During this first period\, the ensemble workedclosely together with composers such as Dieter Mack\, Karmella Tsepkolenko\, Theo Brandmüller\,Bernhard Wulff\, and Thomas Lauck. In 2010\, the ensemble members decided to pursue their ownmusical projects with Voltz venturing out to European Modern Jazz and Riefer moving toSoutheast Asia and focusing on the region’s modes of practice which put „les éclats du son“ onhold. \nAfter a 12-year long hiatus\, the two founding members chose to revive the initial duo bycombining their personal musical experiences from the last decade and subsequently celebratedtheir come back in 2022 with a concert and live broadcast with focus on new music in SoutheastAsia at Saarland Broadcasting Saarbrücken. Currently\, they work on a new program with works byPeter I. Edwards (SIN/USA)\, Dieter Mack (GER)\, I Wayan Sudirana (IDN) \, Joey Tan (SIN) andKatharina Roth (GER). With this program\, they will go on a concert tour to Southeast Asia andproduce a CD in 2024. \nSupported by: \n \nSubscribe to YST’s mailing list. \nTICKETING INFORMATION \nFree admission. \nOut of respect for other concertgoers\, no children under 6 years of age will be allowed admission. \n* All event information is correct at time of print.

ModeratoII. Adagio sostenutoIII. Allegro scherzando \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT THIS EVENT \n\n\n\n\nOne of the magical elements of performative art is its inherent ephemerality. Musicians\, whether they are the concerto soloist\, the conductor\, or the supportive tutti orchestra\, intuitively understand the wonderfully fleeting nature of a concert performance. When composers capture the creative spark – in Prokofiev’s case\, the musical-portrait vignettes of his Visions fugitives– they also tap into these fleeting resonances. \nCome join us for this concert featuring a selection of Prokofiev’s Op. 22 piano miniatures arranged for a full orchestra by students from the YST Composition Studio\, as well as two vibrant concerto performances: Karol Szymanowsky’s Concerto for Violin No.  2 – the composer’s last major work – celebrates Polish highlander folk traditions and featuring YST concerto prize-winner violinist Leonid Datsiuk\, while Rachmaninoff’s triumphant Piano Concert No. 2 – representing the composer’s victory over his own creative fugitives – will be wonderfully captured by YST concerto prize-winner pianist Wang Chien-Jou. \n\nThis event is supported by: \n \n\n\n\n  \nSubscribe to YST’s mailing list. \nTICKETING INFORMATION \nTickets at $10 via Eventbrite. \nOut of respect for the participants and other spectators\, no children under 6 years of age will be allowed admission. \n*All event information is correct at the time of print.

SUMMARY:Mathemusical Encounters: Mystery Machines - Closing Concert
DESCRIPTION:Programme Notes \nPROGRAMME \nHEINRICH IGNAZ FRANZ BIBERMystery Sonata No. 14 in D major\, “The Assumption of Mary” \nBRENDA KOH\, baroque violinLESLIE TAN\, baroque celloVANESSA JAZZY IRWANTO (B.Mus2)\, harpMERVYN LEE\, baroque guitar \nLIKE A BRIDGE \nKARST DE JONG\, pianoGÉRARD ASSAYAG\, Somax2 generative electronics  \nELEZ/BOULAINE \nELAINE CHEW\, piano \nGÉRARD ASSAYAG\, Somax2 generative electronics  \nABOUT THIS EVENT \nMusic and machines have a long-standing relationship\, whether we’re talking about the machinery of compositional thought\, the Baroque material devices imagined by Kircher or Mersenne\, or the most recent developments in computers and artificial intelligence. \nThis concert offers a journey from Biber’s Baroque music to the second half of the XXth century reinterpreted through the prism of improvisation and interaction with these mysterious machines.\nThe Rosary (Mystery) Sonatas by H.I.F Biber is a collection of 15 sonatas for violin and continuo and a final solo passacaglia for violin. Each sonata depicts a mystery of the Rosary\, and the collection displays Biber’s extensive use of the scordatura (or “discordant tuning”) technique. Sonata No. 14 is written after the Assumption of Mary\, one of the Glorious mysteries of the Rosary.\nBridge from ancient music to the masters of modernity\, Karst de Jong will improvise freely and interact with generative live electronics system\, effectively creating a path through time and genres.\nElaine Chew will travel her own way from there trough pages written by some of these masters such as Ravel\, Messiaen and Boulez\, inspiring the dreams of the machine\, which will in turn intervene in her game and create an unheard-of-dialogue.\n \nSubscribe to YST’s mailing list.\nTICKETING INFORMATION \nFree admission via registration only. \nOut of respect for other concertgoers\, no children under 6 years of age will be allowed admission. \nPlease refer to ystmusic.nus.edu.sg for the latest event updates.
