Jun Yan started his composition studies with Mr. Yii Kah Hoe. He graduated with First Class Honours in Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music (YST Conservatory), Singapore and studied under Associate Professor Ho Chee Kong and Professor Steven Miller. He attended the student exchange programme at the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University, where he studied under Dr. Oscar Bettison and has attended master classes with Chaya Czernowin, Liza Lim, Hans Thomalla, Mark Andre, Manos Tsangaris and Yuval Shaked. Jun Yan won 2nd Prize in the Malaysia Modern Poem Composition Competition 2015, was winner of the Society of Malaysia Contemporary Composers’ “Call for Score – Organ solo” 2013, and received 3rd Prize in Category B in the Singapore International Competition for Chinese Music Composition 2012.
In the past few years, he has extended his artistic exploration into interdisciplinary art, composing Strolling for flute, percussion and Chinese calligraphy in year 2013, followed by organising Hearing Visual Looking Sound, a sound-visual improvisation performance in Malaysia in December 2015, and in Thailand in June 2016. He also participated in the SETTS #3 performance in Singapore in May 2016, where he invited musicians and visual artists collaborate live within their native disciplines.
Jun Yan completed his PhD studies in 2018 at the National University of Singapore under Professor Lonce Wyse, researching on the topic Communication Between Sound and Visual Artists in Improvisatory Performance. At the same time, he is presently under the personal tutelage of renowned Erhu musician Mr. Zhang Yu Ming and has participated as an erhu improviser in various concerts, including Hearing Visual Looking Sound (Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok), UITM Spectra 2016 (Kuala Lumpur), the 3rd RSU Electronic Music Concert: Melt (Rangsit University, Bangkok) and RAW Art Space (Kuala Lumpur).
