ABOUT THE EVENT
To begin our exploration of this amazing era of vocal music we will look at the music of Claudio Monteverdi and Sigismundo d’India, presenting the dramatic Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda in a semi-staged version as well as two of d’India’s most famous laments - those of Olympia and Orfeo. The Combattimento presents the tragic struggle of the two lovers who, unable to recognize one another beneath their armor, fight to the death. The laments capture specific moments in time for each of the protagonists and illustrate their tragic grief as they confront their fates and go through all of the stages of grief. The vocal programme will be interspersed by solo music for theorbo.
This event is part of “Masters of Italian Vocal Music”, a 3-day festival of Italian Vocal Music of the 17th Century.
The Conservatory would like to thank artist Mr. Chong Fah Cheong, for his generous loan of “Once Upon a Tree”. The artist has given us the liberty to interact with the sculpture and to present it as a part of this performance.
