Double bassist Pierre-Emmanuel de Maistre originally studied cello at the conservatory in his native city of Toulon and at the conservatory in Rueil-Malmaison. He then studied double bass with Jean-Pierre Resecco in Toulon and with Vincent Pasquier in Paris, going on to complete his studies at the Folkwang Hochschule in Essen with Niek de Groot, former principal double bassist of the Concertgebouw Orchestra.

De Maistre was a member of the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra from 2003 to 2007. He was appointed assistant principal double bassist of the Orchestre National de Lille in 2004, a position he held for nine years. He also worked as a substitute with various French orchestras, and with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in 2012.

Chamber music is an important part of de Maistre’s career; in 2007, he took part in the Seiji Ozawa International Academy, a summer quartet course in Geneva.

Pierre-Emmanuel plays a double bass from the collection of RCO donors’ foundation Stichting Donateurs, a B. S. Fendt built in London in 1850.
