SUMMARY:OpusNovus: This Way to Elsewhere
DESCRIPTION:From Staud’s Par ici! (“This way!”) to Vivier’s imagined Zipangu\, this programme follows music as an act of orientation—towards distant places\, ritual and the unknown. Staud draws on Baudelaire’s Le Voyage\, using microtonal colour to blur the boundaries of the ensemble and unsettle our musical compass. Schnittke’s Hymn III turns the journey inward\, creating a spare\, meditative sound world from cello\, bassoon\, harpsichord and bells. Kallionpää’s The Reef ventures beneath the ocean’s surface\, transforming underwater recordings from Thailand’s Mu Koh Lanta into music for two pianos. Finally\, Vivier transforms a single melody through extremes of string colour\, arriving at a place that feels both distant and imagined.  \nABOUT OPUSNOVUS \nCommitted to presenting groundbreaking repertoire from the 20th and 21st centuries\, YST contemporary music ensemble OpusNovus empowers young musicians to explore and engage with the evolving language of contemporary music through performance\, collaboration\, and experimentation. \nThe ensemble performs works by leading international composers and actively champions Southeast Asian voices. They have shared the stage with acclaimed groups such as the London Sinfonietta and Ensemble Phoenix Basel\, and collaborated with guest conductors like Steven Schick and Jürg Henneberger. \nThe ensemble toured Australia for the first time in 2023 and recently made its China debut in October 2025 at the Shenzhen Belt & Road International Music Festival. Through bold programming and fearless performances\, OpusNovus continues to shape a distinctive voice for new music in Singapore and beyond. \n  \nPROGRAMME \nJOHANNES MARIA STAUD\nPar ici! \nQI YUFEI\, flute\nTAO NUOXI\, clarinet\nCHOI HONG WA\, bassoon\nLUO TIANHAO\, horn\nWEN CHIA-CHUN\, trumpet\nCHRISTIAN DANIEL RAGAY BORRES\, percussion\nCHEN XING-CHI\, piano\nYIN CHEN ZIYUE\, violin\nCLAUDIA KHANG LOO AN\, viola\nSHERZOD BAKHTIYOROV\, cello\nHUANG YUNG-TING\, double bass \nALFRED SCHNITTKE\nHymn III \nCHEN SIHONG\, bassoon\nCHRISTIAN DANIEL RAGAY BORRES\, percussion (bells)\nCHIU PIN-HSIN\, harpsichord\nZHU RUONING\, cello \nMARIA KALLIONPÄÄ\nThe Reef \nCHEN XING-CHI\, piano\nCHIU PIN-HSIN\, piano \nCLAUDE VIVIER\nZipangu \nZHANG HANZHI\, violin\nAUREITSEVICH NATALLIA\, violin\nCHEN YI-TIEN\, violin\nGAO WEI TINA\, violin\nLIN YI-HSUAN\, violin\nNG EE-JUN\, violin\nYIN CHEN ZIYUE\, violin\nKUNG YU-NING\, viola\nLIU XUANYU\, viola\nCLAUDIA KHANG LOO AN\, viola\nASSENBAY ALAN\, cello\nLIU YIDUO\, cello\nLOEWE LIM LI TONG\, double bass \n  \nTICKETING INFORMATION \nAdmission is free and on a first-come\, first-served basis. SUMMARY:Orchestral Institute: Passage!
DESCRIPTION:A passage can be many things: a journey from one place to another\, the passing of time\, a musical phrase\, or the movement of the body. This unique collaboration expands the traditional orchestral concert by exploring the connections between music\, gesture and dance\, revealing new dimensions of two iconic masterpieces. \nStravinsky’s Divertimento from Le Baiser de la Fée (The Fairy’s Kiss) lies at the heart of this exploration. Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s The Ice Maiden and conceived as a tribute to Tchaikovsky\, it transforms melodies from the earlier composer’s songs and piano works into a vivid new musical language\, crossing boundaries between past and present\, memory and imagination. Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 offers a complementary journey\, its emotional intensity and remarkable craftsmanship providing fertile ground for fresh exploration through movement and gesture. \nWorking alongside the creative team\, the YST Orchestral Institute musicians become active participants in this artistic process\, discovering how movement can deepen musical expression and enrich orchestral storytelling. \nUnder the direction of Lien Boon Hua\, with creative collaborators choreographer Sudhee Liao and YST faculty Jonathan Shin and Professor Karst de Jong\, Passage! invites the audience to experience the orchestra as a living\, expressive ensemble\, where music\, movement and storytelling become one. \n  \nPROGRAMME \nYST ORCHESTRAL INSTITUTE\nwith\nLIEN BOON HUA\, conductor\nand\nSUDHEE LIAO\, choreographer\nJONATHAN SHIN\, collaborator\nKARST DE JONG\, collaborator \n  \nIGOR STRAVINSKY\nDivertimento\, from Le baiser de la fée \nWOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART\nSymphony No. 40 in G minor\, K.550 \n  \nTICKETING INFORMATION \nTickets at $26 via yst.eventbrite.com \nPatrons without valid tickets will not be allowed entry.
