SUMMARY:Mirrors: A Fortepiano Recital by Churen Li
DESCRIPTION:Experience the distinctive world of the fortepiano as Singaporean pianist Churen Li presents a fortepiano programme spanning the Classical and Romantic repertoire. Featuring works by Haydn\, Mozart\, Beethoven\, Chopin and Debussy alongside two of Li’s own reimaginings inspired by Bach and Chopin\, the recital explores connections between past and present while showcasing the expressive character and intimate sonorities of the historical instrument. \nWe are grateful to Mr Goh Yew Lin for his generous donation of the Paul McNulty fortepiano used in this recital. \n  \nABOUT CHUREN LI \nWidely regarded as one of Singapore’s leading pianists\, she crafts recital and concerto programmes that bring classical works\, contemporary music and her own compositions into a single\, deeply human narrative. \nHer performances have taken her from opening the Singapore Symphony Orchestra’s season with Grieg’s Piano Concerto to appearing as pianist at Singapore’s SG60 National Day Parade\, and in 2025 she gave the world premiere of a new piano concerto by Jonathan Shin with the SSO. Her recordings include two albums of original music reimagining classical pieces\, Ephemory and LUNA\, as well as Spectrum with violinist Stanislav Pronin on Sony Classical. \nA graduate of the Yale School of Music and the University of Cambridge\, where she earned two Master’s degrees in music and philosophy\, Churen is Artist Faculty at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music and Artist-in-Residence at Sunway University. DESCRIPTION:The Performers(‘) Present international artistic research symposium returns to YST with its 2026 edition\, Interweaving\, bringing together performers\, researchers\, educators\, composers and artists from around the world for four days of performances\, dialogue and artistic exchange. \nInspired by the act of weaving as a metaphor for connection and creative possibility\, Interweaving explores the relationships between Southeast Asian and Western artistic traditions; the intersections of research and performance; the role of music in wellbeing and community; and the evolving dialogue between human creativity and artificial intelligence. \nThe symposium features keynote presentations by Joseph N. Straus\, Vanessa Tomlinson\, and Piyawat Louilarpprasert\, alongside performances and artistic contributions by internationally acclaimed composer Dai Fujikura\, Mivos Quartet\, and other distinguished guest artists. \nConcert highlights include the Opening Concert: Living Threads; Mivos Quartet: Celebrating Reich at 90; and Last Words with the YST Orchestral Institute\, curated by Joseph N. Straus—featuring a programme of works by Aaron Copland\, Ruth Crawford Seeger\, and Alban Berg. \nThrough concerts\, keynote presentations\, plenary sessions\, panel discussions and artistic presentations\, Interweaving celebrates the many ways music\, research and creative practice intersect—fostering new perspectives\, meaningful collaborations and conversations that transcend disciplines\, cultures and traditions. \n  \nTICKETING INFORMATION \nRegistration varies by event. SUMMARY:Orchestral Institute: Last Words
DESCRIPTION:What does an artist leave behind? A final work is rarely just an ending; it can be a summation\, a question\, or the beginning of another conversation. In this evening\, we explore how artistic voices become interwoven across time\, as composers’ final reflections continue to speak long after they were first heard. \nAaron Copland’s Night Thoughts\, one of the composer’s final works\, opens the evening in a world of introspection and quiet contemplation in homage to fellow American composer Charles Ives. This follows with Ruth Crawford Seeger’s Suite for Woodwind Quintet\, her penultimate composition before her death\, revealing the inventive spirit of one of America’s most original modernist voices. At the heart of the programme is Alban Berg’s Violin Concerto\, his final completed orchestral work\, written in memory of Manon Gropius and dedicated to “the memory of an angel”—a work that transforms grief into profound beauty. \nPresented by the YST Orchestral Institute under the baton of Principal Conductor Jason Lai\, and featuring YST Head of Strings Professor Qian Zhou on violin\, Associate Professor Ning An on piano\, guest musicians Gaolat Quintet and narrator Joseph N.
