SUMMARY:YST x SYPO: A Young Person’s Guide – Traditions in Bloom
DESCRIPTION:As the new year unfolds\, the Singapore Youth Philharmonic Orchestra joins forces with YST orchestral musicians\, performing side by side under the direction of Luo Wei in this special family concert celebrating renewal\, heritage\, and transformation. \nFrom the festive brilliance of Joy of Spring and the communal dance rhythms of Dance of the Yao People\, to the fiery exuberance of Enescu’s Romanian Rhapsody No. 1\, the program traces folk traditions as they blossom into symphonic splendor. \nThe concert culminates in Benjamin Britten’s much-loved The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra—a lively\, guided tour of the orchestra itself\, as each family of instruments steps into the spotlight before reuniting in a dazzling finale\, demonstrating how inherited themes can be continually reimagined anew. \nPresented as a guided concert experience and brought to life through the side-by-side collaboration of YST and SYPO musicians\, Traditions in Bloom honors cultural roots in motion—and the diverse musical voices that come together to shape the symphonic orchestra. \n\nPROGRAMME \nClick here to view the concert programme booklet. \nMAO YUAN (茅沅)Joy of Spring \nMAO YUAN (茅沅)LIU TIESHAN (刘铁山)Dance of the Yao People \nGEORGE ENESCURomanian Rhapsody No. 1 in A major \nBENJAMIN BRITTENThe Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra \n\nTICKETING INFORMATION \nAdmission is free and on a first-come\, first-served basis. SUMMARY:MCP Capstone: Shadowed Encounters
DESCRIPTION:Follow guzheng player Xin Tong as she encounters the global cousins of her instrument\, seeking not just the music of the zither\, but the spirit of the people who play them. The performance brings these human connections to the stage\, where she discovers the music and people behind the Japanese Koto\, the Finnish Kantele\, and the Persian Qanun. \nAs she encounters these musicians\, she picks up new aesthetics for her instrument. The Guzheng\, originally playing traditional Chinese music\, is reconfigured to embrace new styles inspired by these meetings. \nThe resulting performance is a living archive of these encounters – we are the sum of the people who have guided us\, and every note we strike carries the shadow of a friend and mentor. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nPROGRAMME \n\n\n\n\nCHAN XIN TONG (BMus4)\, guzheng/presenterKITAI SAEKO\, koto WU ZHI YUN\, kotoAURORA FUSTINONI\, kanteleSARA MAJIDI NEJAD\, qanun \n\n\n\n\n  \nTICKETING INFORMATION \nAdmission is free with registration via Eventbrite. \nOut of respect for all patrons\, late admission will only be allowed at suitable intervals. SUMMARY:OpusNovus: Homage to Boulez
DESCRIPTION:OpusNovus pays tribute to Pierre Boulez (1925–2016)\, the visionary French composer and conductor who shaped contemporary music. The programme opens and closes with Boulez’s crystalline miniatures\, the shimmering Dérive 1 and the elegiac Mémoriale\, featuring our new Head of Winds\, Associate Professor Eric Lamb. \nBetween these pillars\, works by composers from Boulez’s constellation chart a journey through contemporary sound: Dai Fujikura’s playful Deconstructing Franz reimagines classical materials\, while George Crumb’s Music for the Starry Night evokes celestial wonder through his signature timbral alchemy. From post-war modernism to today’s new music\, the evening traces voices that continue to expand the possibilities of musical expression. \n  \nPROGRAMME \nPIERRE BOULEZDérive 1 \nLAZUTINA ANNA VLADIMIROVNA (BMus2)\, fluteHAYDEN CHUNG-HEI BUTT (BMus3)\, clarinetKUO YAN-SHIN (BMus3)\, percussionLIN SIN-YUE (BMus3)\, pianoSYU CHENG-YI (BMus3)\, violinLIU YUBIN (BMus3)\, cello \nDAI FUJIKURADeconstructing Franz \nPENG YIYANG (BMus3)\, violinSUN ZHENYAO (BMus3)\, violinLU MINA (BMus3)\, violaSHERZOD BAKHTIYOROV (BMus4)\, cello \nGEORGE CRUMBMusic for the Starry Night \nKUO YAN-SHIN (BMus3)\, percussionISABEL CHIN CHUN EN (BMus3)\, percussionLIN SIN-YUE (BMus3)\, pianoMI MAW LI AWNG (BMus3)\, piano \nPIERRE BOULEZMémoriale \nERIC LAMB\, solo fluteLIN SHU-YU (BMus3)\, hornTSENG HUA-CHIH (BMus3)\, hornSYU CHENG-YI (BMus3)\, violinPENG YIYANG (BMus3)\, violinSUN ZHENYAO (BMus3)\, violinLU MINA (BMus3)\, violaHO QIAN HUI\, violaSHERZOD BAKHTIYOROV (BMus4)\, cello \n  \nTICKETING INFORMATION \nAdmission is free and on a first-come\, first-served basis. SUMMARY:MCP Capstone: In Another Light
DESCRIPTION:How often do we link musicians to genres or cultural frames without realising it? \nThis concert reimagines the Guzheng beyond its usual setting\, placing it in dialogue with a Western string quartet. As textures intertwine and musical roles evolve\, familiar boundaries begin to soften. \nBy situating the Guzheng in varied settings throughout the programme\, the performance reflects on how placement shapes the way we understand musical roles. When an instrument appears where it is not typically expected\, something changes. Not in the instrument itself\, but in the way we experience it. \n  \nPROGRAMME \nKUAH HUI MIN (BMus4)\, GuzhengFOONG SHU YAN ASHLEY (BMus1)\, ViolinSIEW XUAN YING (BMus1)\, ViolinCHER ZHI XIAN TIMOTHY (BMus1)\, Viola           YOUJIA CHEN (BMus3)\, Cello \n  \n娄树华 LOU SHU HUA渔舟唱晚 The Fishing Boat Song at Dusk \n王巽之 WANG XUN ZHI高山流水 （浙江）High Mountain Flowing Water \nCLAUDE DEBUSSY arr. SUMMARY:MCP Capstone: Mea(r)t Paradox
DESCRIPTION:Mea(r)t Paradox is a capstone concert production presented at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music\, National University of Singapore. Through five original works\, the performance reflects on the varied roles animals occupy in our lives and the ways these relationships shape everyday experience. \nAcross cultures and contexts\, animals are companions\, symbols\, sources of livelihood\, and members of shared environments. These overlapping roles are often navigated intuitively\, shaped by habit\, upbringing\, and social norms. Mea(r)t Paradox considers how such patterns of thought and feeling develop\, and how they exist within our ordinary lives. \nDrawing on research in animal ethics\, cognitive psychology\, and artivism (artistic activism)\, the concert translates these themes into musical forms. Through sounds\, speech\, and staging\, abstract questions become perceptible experiences\, allowing audiences to encounter complexity through listening rather than debate. The performance does not advocate specific positions; instead\, it creates space for attentive reflection and personal interpretation. \nAccessible to audiences of all backgrounds\, the concert integrates spoken framing and thematic guidance\, inviting listeners to engage thoughtfully with questions that are both intimate and societal. At its core\, Mea(r)t Paradox offers an opportunity to pause\, listen\, and reconsider the subtle ways our relationships with animals shape the world we inhabit together. \n\n\n  \nPROGRAMME \n\n\nPre-Concert Exhibition (7 pm – 7.30 pm)\n (at the Concert Hall Foyer)\n\n\nConcert (7.30 pm – 8.30pm)\n(in the Concert Hall)\n    NEO JIE NING\n\n\n\n\nInnocence\n\n\nHierarchy\n\n\nDissonances\n\n\nMotherhood\n\nParadox\n\n\n\n\n\nPost-Concert Exhibition (8.30 pm – 9 pm)\n(at the Concert Hall Foyer)\n\n\n*All guests are highly encouraged to visit the pre- and post-concert exhibition \nNEO JIE NING (BMus4)\, piano/hostKELSEY TAN YU XI (BMus4)\, flute/piccoloPRESTON NG JUIN RONG (BMus1)\, violinTOH CHANG HUI (BMus4)\, tromboneSAMIKSHA ARGAL (BMus4)\, mezzo soprano \n  \nTICKETING INFORMATION \nAdmission is free with registration via Eventbrite. \nOut of respect for all patrons\, late admission will only be allowed at suitable intervals. SUMMARY:An Evening of Hindemith
DESCRIPTION:Marking the 130th anniversary of Paul Hindemith’s birth\, this concert shines a light on a composer whose music—often misunderstood or overlooked—reveals wit\, craftsmanship\, and expressive depth. Featuring a selection of his instrumental sonatas performed by YST faculty\, the programme seeks to dispel enduring myths surrounding his music—both about its supposed atonality and its fearsome technical challenges. \n  \nPROGRAMME \nSonata for Flute and Piano (1936)I.
