SUMMARY:NUS Symphony Orchestra – Crossings in Sound
DESCRIPTION:Crossings in Sound by NUS Symphony Orchestra showcases the versatility of orchestral music and its ability to bring together various traditions\, sounds\, and stories. The pieces featured in this concert each explore contrasts and intersections in different ways.\n \n  \nRossini’s overture to La gazza ladra (The Thieving Magpie) sets the tone\, sharply oscillating between playfulness and darker\, more dramatic emotions. Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story vividly fuses jazz\, Latin rhythms\, and distinctive orchestration\, creating a layered aural tapestry of a city filled with colour and hope.\nThe concert culminates in Beethoven’s monumental Triple Concerto\, a work of extraordinary scope that brings together three YST Conservatory senior faculty alongside acclaimed alumnus David Loke in a remarkable institutional showcase. Pianist Ning An\, violinist David Loke\, and cellist Qin Li-Wei unite as soloists with NUS Symphony Orchestra in an intricate musical dialogue under the baton of Associate Professor Chan Tze Law. This rare convergence of conservatory faculty and distinguished alumni in one of Beethoven’s most demanding chamber-orchestral works represents a significant artistic milestone\, embodying the collaborative spirit and pedagogical excellence that define YST Conservatory.\nThrough this performance\, NUS Symphony Orchestra creates an accessible and engaging encounter with classical music that appeals to audiences of all ages and walks of life. Crossings in Sound also launches the Orchestra’s international season.\n  \nPROGRAMME \nNUS SYMPHONY ORCHESTRAwithCHAN TZE LAW\, conductorandDAVID LOKE\, violinQIN LI-WEI\, celloNING AN\, piano \nGIOACCHINO ROSSINIOverture to La gazza ladra (The Thieving Magpie) \nLEONARD BERNSTEINFrom West Side StorySymphonic Dances \nLUDWIG VAN BEETHOVENTriple Concerto for Violin\, Cello and Piano in C major\, Op. 56 \nTICKETING INFORMATION \nTickets via BookMyShow. \nPatrons without valid tickets will not be allowed entry. SUMMARY:Orchestral Institute: Cross-Currents
DESCRIPTION:Across the shifting boundaries between sky and sea\, we are drawn to the moments where elements meet—where one world dissolves into another\, and where motion emerges from stillness. Cross-currents invites us into these liminal realms\, tracing music’s ability to inhabit the spaces in-between\, and the journey a single current takes as it drifts into something vast beyond measure. \nThe evening opens with Debussy’s Syrinx\, performed by YST Head of Winds\, Brass & Percussion\, Associate Professor Eric Lamb—a pivotal early 20th-Century work for solo flute\, imbued with the tale of the mythical god Pan’s pursuit of the nymph Syrinx\, and the quiet tragedy of her transformation. From this quietude\, the third movement of Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 emerges\, a work that blends bright-eyed innocence with profound introspection\, offering a child’s vision of paradise—delicate and luminous\, yet touched by subtle shadows. The currents then widen into Debussy’s La Mer\, three symphonic sketches that evoke the endless expanse of the sea and its constant transformation. \nOn this Valentine’s evening\, the YST Orchestral Institute invites you to drift between these worlds\, where currents cross and emotions converge—not in declarations\, but in the quiet\, inexhaustible motion of sound. \nProgramme Notes \n  \nPROGRAMME \nYST ORCHESTRAL INSTITUTEwithJASON LAI\, conductorandERIC LAMB\, flute \nCLAUDE DEBUSSYSyrinx for Solo Flute\, L. 129 \nGUSTAV MAHLERSymphony No. 4 in G major <1892-1900; rev 1901-1910>Ill.
