In the weeks leading up to the concert\, JC and NUS students come together for rehearsals and sharing of best practices—building friendships\, exchanging tips\, and aspirations for the future of Chinese orchestral music in Singapore. SUMMARY:OpusNovus: Spectral Light
DESCRIPTION:Spectral Light is the final OpusNovus concert of the semester\, bringing together two ideas at its core: Grisey’s Partiels\, a seminal work of spectral music built from the overtones of a single trombone note\, and Thorvaldsdottir’s Illumine\, where sound slowly unfolds into glowing waves of resonance. Around them\, Shinohara’s Play for Nine Wind Instruments dazzles with rhythmic color\, Finnissy’s Not Envious of Rabbits pits volatility against fragile lyricism\, and Eötvös’ Lisztomania refracts Liszt’s Romantic brilliance through a contemporary lens. These works\, playful to luminous to monumental\, reveal how composers of the last fifty years have bent sound into new spectrums of expression.\n\nPROGRAMME \nANNA THORSVALDSDOTTIR Illumine \nVIKTORIA IVAYLOVA MARINOVA\, violinXU ZHUORUI\, violinZHAO TONGZHOU\, violinCAITLIN CHIN KAI LI\, violaYU YANG\, violaREN ZHIYI\, celloCHEN YOUJIA\, celloYUAN MOER\, double bass \nMAKOTO SHINOHARAPlay for Nine Wind Instruments \nOH SEONYOUNG\, fluteSIMEON YAP SHENG KIAT\, fluteQUEK JUN RUI\, oboeDOMINIC KOH\, clarinetZHANG LIANGLIANG\, clarinetLIU JIAYU\, bassoonLAU EN QI CHLOE\, hornCHIU FANG-MENG\, trumpetCHEN SHIJIN\, trombone \nPETER EÖTVÖS Lisztomania \nCHEN BO-YU\, pianoFONG JEAN YING\, pianoKUO LYU-CEN\, pianoLIN SHIH-EN\, piano \nMICHAEL FINNISSYNot Envious of Rabbits \nLIU JIAYU\, bassoonCHIU FANG-MENG\, trumpetCHEN SHIJIN\, tromboneTUNG WEI-ZHEN\, tubaZHAO TONGZHOU\, violinWANG JIAYE\, cello \nGERALD GRISEY Partiels \nOH SEONYOUNG\, fluteSIMEON YAP SHENG KIAT\, fluteQUEK JUN RUI\, oboeDOMINIC KOH\, clarinetZHANG LIANGLIANG\, clarinetSTEPHANIE TAN\, clarinetHARSHARON KAUR\, hornLAU EN QI CHLOE\, hornLOW KIM VEN\, bass tromboneEVELYN KUO CHAN\, percussionLIN YEN TING\, percussionCHEN BO-YU\, pianoCHIEN HSIN\, violinCHEN SHU-YU\, violinCAITLIN CHIN KAI LI\, violaYU YANG\, violaCHEN YOUJIA\, celloYUAN MOER\, double bass \n  \nTICKETING INFORMATION \nFree with registration via yst.eventbrite.com. \nOut of respect for the participants and other spectators\, no children under 6 years of age will be allowed admission. \nBe the first to hear about our upcoming events! SUMMARY:[CANCELLED] [Concerto Prizewinners Showcase] Ones to Watch – Orchestral Institute: An Ode to Love
DESCRIPTION:Due to urgent safety-related maintenance works at the YST Concert Hall\, this concert has been cancelled to ensure the safety and comfort of all attendees. \n“Heard melodies are sweet\, but those unheard / Are sweeter.” — John Keats\, from Ode on a Grecian Urn \nIn the Romantic era\, the ode emerged as a form of poetic tribute — a heartfelt\, often exalted contemplation on beauty\, nature\, and the sublime. An Ode to Love draws from this tradition\, inviting us to explore the depths of emotion that music can transcend beyond sound. \nWe open with Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture (Fingal’s Cave) — a vivid evocation of nature’s grandeur\, inspired by the composer’s encounter with the rugged Scottish coastline. We then move inward with Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto\, written during a turbulent period in the composer’s life as a personal ode to forbidden passion. The evening culminates with Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 1 — a profound meditation on love’s trials and triumphs\, steeped in grandeur and emotional intensity. \nPresented by the YST Orchestral Institute under the batons of Principal Conductor Jason Lai and Feng Jiale (MMus\, Conducting)\, and joined by YST Concerto Competition 2025 Prizewinners Syu Cheng-Yi (BMus3\, Violin) and Chai Zi Qing (BMus4\, Piano)\, An Ode to Love is a poetic journey that draws us not only towards love’s melodies\, but also the unheard echoes of its enduring power. \nSupported by the Shaw Foundation Ones to Watch series. \nPROGRAMME \nYST ORCHESTRAL INSTITUTEwithJASON LAI\, conductorFENG JIALE^ (MMus)\, conductorandSYU CHENG-YI (BMus3)\, violinCHAI ZI QING (BMus4)\, piano^FELIX MENDELSSOHNThe Hebrides Overture (Fingal’s Cave)PYOTR TCHAIKOVSKYViolin Concerto in D Major\, Op. 35JOHANNES BRAHMSPiano Concerto No. 1 in D Minor\, Op. 15 \n  \nTICKETING INFORMATION \nTickets at $26 via yst.eventbrite.com. \nOut of respect for the participants and other spectators\, no children under 6 years of age will be allowed admission. \nBe the first to hear about our upcoming events!
