SUMMARY:Community Concert - Brahms: Forward Together
DESCRIPTION:The YST Orchestral Institute and the Singapore Youth Philharmonic Orchestra\, under the direction of YST alumnus Luo Wei\, come together for a special side-by-side family concert performance. Curated and produced by YST students\, this concert features movements from Brahms’s monumental Symphony No. 4. \nThis performance also explores the rich musical friendship between Johannes Brahms (1833–97) and Antonín Dvořák (1841–1904). Brahms\, revered for his depth and complexity\, became an essential mentor to the younger Dvořák\, whose music radiates warmth and Bohemian spirit. Their connection began when Brahms discovered Dvořák’s Serenade for Strings—a piece that revealed the Czech composer’s gift for lyricism and dance. This program pairs selections from that very work with Brahms’s mighty Symphony No. 4\, showcasing not only their artistic bond but also their contrasting voices—Brahms’s introspective intensity and Dvořák’s joyful exuberance. \nJoin us for an afternoon of musical friendship and mentorship as orchestral musicians from YST & SYPO bring to life the legacy of two of the Romantic era’s most extraordinary composers. \n“It is like a dark well; the longer we look into it\, the more brightly the stars shine back.” \n– Eduard Hanslik (on Brahms’s Symphony No. 4) \n  \nTICKETING INFORMATION \nAdmission is free with registration via yst.eventbrite.com. \nBe the first to hear about our upcoming events! SUMMARY:Forum: Transcriptions of Chinese Piano Music
DESCRIPTION:The piano is an instrument that has the capability of imitating instrumental sound and orchestral music. During the third quarter of the 20th century\, Chinese composers seek inspiration and freshness in composing piano music that could represent their cultural heritage. They often turned to writing piano transcriptions of the traditional Chinese instrumental music. \nIn this lecture recital by YST faculty member Dr Koo Siaw Sing\, we will discuss selected piano transcriptions originated from the traditional Chinese string instruments such as guqin\, zheng\, pipa\, and erhu. These traditional instruments provide nuances\, expressiveness\, and techniques which are very different from the western string instruments. \nPianists need to understand the unique characteristics and techniques of these instruments in order to interpret the music correctly. We will make a comparison between the piano transcription and the original instrumental music\, investigating on how composers mimicking these instrumental sounds on the piano. Finally\, we will discuss pianistic approaches and technical adjustments needed to best capture the sounds and the spirit of these pieces. \n  \nTICKETING INFORMATION \nAdmission is free and on a first-come\, first-served basis. Out of respect for the participants and other spectators\, no children under 6 years of age will be allowed admission. \nBe the first to hear about our upcoming events! Join our mailing list here.

SUMMARY:Chamber Music Week: Opening Gala - The Gabrieli Project
DESCRIPTION:The Chamber Music Week Opening Gala – The Gabrieli Project\, directed by Artistic Director Alan Choo\, features YST students alongside members of YST Ensemble-in-Residence Red Dot Baroque in the grand polychoral music from 17th-century San Marco Cathedral in Venice. Composers such as Giovanni Gabrieli\, Francesco Cavalli and Biagio Marini celebrated the unique architecture of the Cathedral and its many balconies by writing music for multiple instrumental choirs\, each to be performed from different balconies and locations. \n \nIn the context of 21st Century YST Conservatory\, the similarly unique structure of the YST building will be utilized to bring out the call-and-response and echo effects of the music. Audiences travel together with the musicians to experience the music in multiple stations in the building\, culminating in the epic Canzon for 22 parts in 5 instrumental choirs\, by Giovanni Gabrieli in the concert hall. An exciting immersive experience not to be missed! \nThe Chamber Music Week Opening Gala is supported by the Shaw Foundation Ones to Watch series.\n\nPROGRAMME \nCLAUDIO MONTERVERDI – Toccata to OrfeoChou Hsin-Yu (BMus3)\, Wen Chia Chun (BMus 1)\, trumpetTseng Hua-Chih (BMus2)\, hornChen Shijin (BMus2)\, Zhang Zhuoli (BMus 1)\, tromboneLucas Kwai (BMus1)\, bass tromboneChen Yi-Chung (BMus4)\, tabor drum \nGIOVANNI GABRIELI – Canzon in echo à 12Choir 1Chou Hsin-Yu (BMus3)\, trumpetWen Chia Chun (BMus1)\, trumpetTseng Hua-Chih (BMus2)\, hornLiu Xiaowei (BMus1)\, bass trombone \nChoir 2Tan Xin Jie (BMus4)\, violinYeo See Kang (BMus1)\, violinWu Haiping (BMus1)\, violaChen Youjia (BMus2)\, cello \nChoir 3Qi Yufei (BMus1)\, fluteGao Wei Tina (BMus1)\, violinChen Shijin (BMus2)\, tromboneLim Jun Yi (BMus2)\, tuba \nSALOMONE ROSSI – Sonata in dialogo detta la VienaRed Dot BaroqueGabriel Lee & Placida Ho\, baroque violiLeslie Tan\, baroque celloChristopher Clarke\, theorbo \nLODOVICO GROSSI DA VIADANA – “La Bergamasca”Choir 1Syu Cheng-Yi (BMus2)\, violinWu Tsai-Jou (BMus4)\, violinErlene Koh (RDB)\, violaAssenbay Alan (BMus1)\, cello \nChoir 2Qi Yufei (BMus1)\, fluteYeo See Kang (BMus1)\, violinZhang Zhuoli (BMus1)\, tromboneLucas Kwai (BMus1)\, bass trombone \nGIROLAMO FANTINI – Entrata Imperiale per sonare in concertoChou Hsin-Yu (BMus3)\, Wen Chia Chun (BMus1)\, trumpetTseng Hua-Chih (BMus2)\, hornChen Shijin (BMus2)\, Zhang Zhuoli (BMus1)\, tromboneLucas Kwai (BMus1) & Liu Xiaowei (BMus1)\, bass tromboneLim Jun Yi (BMus2)\, tubaChen Yi-Chung (BMus4)\, tabor drum \nCESARE BENDINELLI – Sonata No. 333Chou Hsin-Yu (BMus3)\, Wen Chia Chun (BMus1)\, trumpetTseng Hua-Chih (BMus2)\, hornChen Shijin (BMus2)\, Zhang Zhuoli (BMus1)\, tromboneLucas Kwai (BMus1) & Liu Xiaowei (BMus1)\, bass tromboneLim Jun Yi (BMus2)\, tubaChen Yi-Chung (BMus4)\, timpani \nBIAGIO MARINI – Sonata in ecco\, for 3 violinsRed Dot BaroqueAlan Choo\, baroque violinGabriel Lee & Placida Ho\, baroque echo violinLeslie Tan\, baroque celloMervyn Lee\, organChristopher Clarke\, theorbo \nFRANCESCO CAVALLI – Sonata à 12\, from Musiche SacreChoir 1Wu Tsai-Jou (BMus4)\, violinGao Wei Tina (BMus1)\, violinErlene Koh (RDB)\, violaWu Haiping (BMus1)\, violaChen Youjia (BMus2)\, celloAssenbay Alan (BMus1)\, cello \nChoir 2Chou Hsin-Yu (BMus3)\, trumpetTseng Hua-Chih (BMus2)\, hornChen Shijin (BMus2)\, tromboneZhang Zhuoli (BMus1)\, tromboneLiu Xiaowei (BMus1)\, bass tromboneLim Jun Yi (BMus2)\, tuba \n+ Loewe Lim (BMus1)\, bass+ Mervyn Lee (RDB)\, organ+ Christopher Clarke (RDB)\, theorbo \nANTONIO BERTALI – Sonata a due chori a 8 in a minorSyu Cheng-Yi (BMus2)\, violin (solo)Tan Xin Jie (BMus4)\, violin (solo)Wu Tsai-Jou (BMus4)\, violinYeo See Kang (BMus1)\, violinErlene Koh (RDB)\, violaWu Haiping (BMus1)\, violaChen Youjia (BMus2)\, celloAssenbay Alan (BMus1)\, cello \n+ Loewe Lim (BMus 1)\, bass+ Mervyn Lee (RDB)\, organ+ Christopher Clarke (RDB)\, theorbo \nGIOVANNI GABRIELI – Sonata XX à 22\, C. 213Choir 1Chou Hsin-Yu (BMus3)\, trumpetTan Xin Jie (BMus4)\, violinErlene Koh (RDB)\, violaLiu Xuanyu (BMus1)\, violaLeslie Tan (RDB)\, celloLucas Kwai (BMus1)\, bass trombone \nChoir 2Syu Cheng-Yi (BMus2)\, violinYeo See Kang (BMus1)\, violinWu Haiping (BMus1)\, violaLoewe Lim (BMus1)\, bass \nChoir 3Tseng Hua-Chih (BMus2)\, hornZhang Zhuoli (BMus1)\, tromboneLiu Xiaowei (BMus1)\, bass tromboneLim Jun Yi (BMus2)\, tuba \nChoir 4Wen Chia Chun (BMus1)\, trumpetWu Tsai-Jou (BMus4)\, violinChen Shijin (BMus2)\, tromboneChen Youjia (BMus2)\, cello \nChoir 5Qi Yufei (BMus1)\, fluteGao Wei Tina (BMus1)\, violinPlacida Ho (RDB)\, violaAssenbay Alan (BMus1)\, cello \n+ Mervyn Lee (RDB)\, organ+ Christopher Clarke (RDB)\, theorbo \n\n  \nABOUT CHAMBER MUSIC WEEKChamber Music Week 2025 brings together top local and international artists and ensembles for a week-long celebration of chamber music\, and we’re kicking it off with our opening gala\, led by YST Ensemble-in-Residence Red Dot Baroque! \nOver the course of the week\, look forward to chamber masterclasses and performances by acclaimed violist Su Zhen\, Spectra Ensemble\, tenor Mark Tucker\, violinist Zhang Jia\, pianist Daniel de Borah\, YST contemporary music ensemble OpusNovus\, YST Ensemble-in-Residence Red Dot Baroque\, and the YST Voice and Composition Departments. SUMMARY:Chamber Week – Festival Recital III: Spectra Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT SPECTRA \nSPECTRA\, curious for new music. From 1993 onwards the ensemble developed a remarkable musical coherence and a unique\, refined sound starting from a fixed nucleu with conductor Filip Rathé and violinist Pieter Jansen serving as co-artistic directors of the ensemble. \nSPECTRA develops trajectories with composers living in Flanders and promotes their work in international as well as historical context. The ensemble premieres many commissioned works in a continuous dialogue with referential masterpieces from the recent past. \nSPECTRA explores a wide range of presentation formats and collaborates with composers\, theatre makers\, visual artists and writers in the construction of non-dogmatic programmes and idiosyncratic interpretations. This has led to collaborations with Luca Francesconi\, Stefano Gervasoni\, Philippe Hurel\, Guy Cassiers\, Fabrice Murgia\, Philip Blasband\, Peter Verhelst\, etc. \nSPECTRA performs within and outside Europe at festivals like Ars Musica (BE)\, Transit (BE)\, Festival Musica Nova (BRA)\, November Music Festival (NL)\, Musica Sacra (NL)\, OEROL Festival (NL)\, Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival (UK)\, Traiettorie Festival (IT)\, Biennale Venezia (IT)\, World Music Days 2010 Sydney (AU)\, Gaida Festival (IT)\, Musica Strasbourg (FR) and Festival Internacional de Buenos Aires (ARG). \nThe ensemble coaches students in the Advanced Master Contemporary Music programme at the School of Arts Ghent. \nDon’t miss Spectra’s second recital later in the week: \nChamber Week – Spectra Ensemble Recital21 March (Fri)\, 7:30pm | Concert Hall | $20With the Support of the Flemish Government \n  \nPROGRAMME \nView the programme notes via this link. \n\n\n\nENSEMBLE SPECTRA: FILIP RATHÉ\, conductorwithPIETER JANSEN\, violinBRAM BOSSIER\, violaFRANCIS MOUREY\, celloTILLE VAN GASTEL\, fluteJULIEN BENETEAU\, clarinetFRANK VAN EYCKEN\, percussionLUKAS HUISMAN\, piano \nONG PING DIN sepasang for Septet \nJODI TANThe Harebell Fairy for Septet \nESTENE CHEONG STARS for Sextet \nJELLAL KOAY結び Musubi for Septet \n\n\n\nLEOŠ JANÁCEKMládí (Youth) for wind sextetI.
