SUMMARY:Ones to Watch Series: Concerto Prizewinner Showcase – Unfinished Business
DESCRIPTION:“Through whirling clouds\, waltzing couples may be faintly distinguished. The clouds gradually scatter… an immense hall peopled with a whirling crowd…” – Maurice Ravel\, Preface to La Valse \nIn splendidly chandeliered halls where no vestige of shadow exists\, the waltz presides; it is an excuse for wickedly transgressive intimacy\, a promise of reveries. The waltz\, with its intoxicating and ensnaring circularity\, is also the perfect guise for time’s ravages. In the words of Maurice Ravel: “This dance may seem tragic\, like any other emotion – voluptuousness\, joy – pushed to the extreme.” \nIf Schubert’s Symphony No. 7 “Unfinished” captured the golden moment of European Romanticism at its height\, a hundred years later\, Ravel’s 1920 La valse met with a world making sense amidst shambles and destruction of the “Great War”; opulence made carcasses by shadows that even the most impressive illuminations could not chase away. Caught at the crossfire of change (and another World War)\, Korngold\, and the world he inhabited\, grappled with the tragedies and triumphs of humanity’s folly-filled search for its better angels. \nThis is music of ‘unfinished business’; the unfinished works\, unfinished stories\, unfinished pursuits of peace. Come join us for this concert featuring the YST Orchestral Institute\, as well as YST Concerto Competition prizewinner violinist Tsao Wei-Chun (BMus3) who will perform Korngold’s Violin Concerto. \nSupported by the Shaw Foundation Ones to Watch series. \n \n  \nPROGRAMME \nOrchestral Institute with Jason Lai\, Conductor Tsao Wei-Chun (BMus3)\, Violin \nFRANZ SCHUBERT Symphony No. 7 in B Minor D. 759 “Unfinished” \n– 15 minutes intermission – \nERICH WOLFGANG KORNGOLD Violin Concerto in D Major\, Op. 35 \nMAURICE RAVEL La valse\, A Choreographic Poem   \n  \nTICKETING INFORMATION \nTickets at $5-10 via yst.eventbrite.com. \nOut of respect for the participants and other spectators\, no children under 6 years of age will be allowed admission. \nSubscribe to YST’s mailing list here.

SUMMARY:KEY ENCOUNTERS – Piano Improvisations
DESCRIPTION:YST Professor of Improvisation Karst De Jong and guest artist Bert Mooiman demonstrates in this concert that classical improvisation is alive and can be a means for reflecting on and interacting with musical genres. Look forward to an evening of improvisations on well-loved classical works\, fused with themes and suggestions taken from the audience in real time\, all in all creating a fresh musical journey. \nPROGRAMME \nKARST DE JONG\, PianoBERT MOOIMAN\, Piano \n1. Inspiration of Bach \nBach is the godfather of improvisation\, he was known for his abilities to improvise the most complex of musical structures on the fly. His compositions are timeless and ever-inspiring. Karst and Bert will open this concert with improvisations inspired by the grand master. \n2. Let’s dance \nDance music is of all ages and genres. We will play improvisations inspired by some of the beautiful dances found in our repertoire. \n3. How about you? \nThe audience is invited to come up with themes for us to improvise on. It can also be something more abstract such as a mood\, colour\, story or series of notes. \n– Intermission – \n4. Musical letters \nKarst and Bert will write good old fashioned letters to each other. Improvisations will be passed on and answered in a fluid stream of consciousness expressed on two pianos. \n5. Finale \nComing out of the letter exchange is completely unplanned finale for two pianos. \nTICKETING INFORMATION \nAdmission is free and on a first-come\, first-served basis. Out of respect for the participants and other spectators\, no children under 6 years of age will be allowed admission. \nSubscribe to YST’s mailing list here.
