SUMMARY:The Learning Curve: That Teacher Behind The Screen – Is it Human?
DESCRIPTION:KHOO HUI LING\, presenter \nABOUT THE EVENT \nThe Learning Curve is an ongoing series led by Khoo Hui Ling exploring challenging aspects of teaching and learning in music education. It is a discussion not just for educators\, but for students and parents too; it tackles issues music educators may confront\, raises questions students can reflect on and discusses decisions that parents often struggle with. \n‘The Teacher Behind The Screen – Is it Human?’ is the topic of the coming session. In light of Covid-19\, music educators turned to online teaching. The reaction from music educators\, students and parents have been mixed. While few would claim that online music teaching is better than in person teaching\, some claim that it is just as good as in person teaching. The rest feel it can never replace physical instruction\, as online teaching lacks a ‘human’ element. \nThis session features interviews with various music educators\, parents and students\, on online music teaching. Many dialogues have discussed if online teaching is effective\, but this session will instead focus on these questions: \n\nHow can online music teaching can be more ‘human’?\nWhat does it even mean to be ‘human’ in music teaching?\n\nCome share your take on online music teaching with us! \nThis event will be livestreamed on the Conservatory’s YouTube channel. Follow and subscribe to be notified of upcoming streams. \nSubscribe to YST’s mailing list. \nTICKETING INFORMATION \n• Due to COVID-19 related guidelines\, this performance will only be offered virtually. • All event information is correct at time of print.

SUMMARY:ACM Lunchtime Concert: Musical Exploration of the Tang Shipwreck
DESCRIPTION:PROGRAMME \nWARES and WAVES\nI. Where did the wares in ocean journey go\nII. and cobalt\, glazed\, from kiln to ship\, below?\nIII. In billows jade the colour bright of moss\nIV. in waves they fade\, like dice they turn and toss.\nV. I saw at dusk a fisherman’s torch glare:\nVI. on ewers\, pitchers\, shells\, on earthenware;\nVII. in splendour whisking rudder on the wave\nVIII. for cultures from the past the sea is grave.\nABOUT THIS EVENT \nWARES and WAVES is a collaborative project created by the conservatory’s Text and Music class in response to the Tang Shipwreck collection housed at the Asian Civilisations Museum. Curated by Dr. Chen Zhangyi and Dr. Sara Florian\, the project features musical Waves corresponding to the lines of Florian’s new poem ‘Wares’\, inspired by the Chinese poetry of the Tang period and the Tang Shipwreck. Discovered in 1998 off the coast of Belitung Island\, the shipwreck uncovers the interactions of past cultures between Asia and the Middle-east\, serving as a fascinating resource for musical creation.\n \nThe vast amount of cargo carried on the Arab dhow presents a beautiful array of colours\, representative of the aesthetics and demand during 9th century trade along the maritime Silk Road. Distinct colours such as the cobalt blue on white stoneware dishes\, the jade-green ceramics of Yue and Gongxian kilns\, the snow-white ceramics of Xing kilns\, and the Changsha bowls artwork and poetic inscriptions are transformed into visual cues for the music. Out of the metal wares\, inspirations are drawn from a bronze lobed mirror with a scholar playing zither\, an exquisite golden octagonal cup with musicians and a dancer\, and a cracked cymbal. The bone dice\, acorn-shaped game pieces\, coins\, and inkstone gives us some inkling of activities that kept the crew occupied on board – giving further prompts for musical and poetic responses.\n \nThe musical performance of Wares and Waves will be accompanied by video clips made by the musicians. Recitations of the newly created poetry and poetry found on the artefacts will stitch together the past and the present\, as well as the musical segments\, mirroring the unique sewn construction of the ship.  \n \nThis season\, ACM’s Lunchtime Concerts will come to you virtually. Enjoy a livestream of enchanting and thought-provoking music brought to you by the students and faculty from Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music. This season’s highlights include collaborations by Karst de Jong\, Chen Zhangyi\, Tony Makarome and Syafiqah ’Adha Sallehin.\n \n13 Nov: Do not miss the last concert of the season\, inspired by ACM’s Tang Shipwreck Collection as curated by Dr Chen Zhangyi and his students. \n \nPerformances take place every Friday from 12.30pm\, from 2 October to 13 November\, coming live to you from the ACM Facebook page.\nSubscribe to YST’s mailing list. \nIn partnership with: \n \nTICKETING INFORMATION • Due to COVID-19 related guidelines\, this performance will only be offered virtually. • All event information is correct at time of print.

SUMMARY:Conservatory Orchestra Series: Springs of Uncertainty
DESCRIPTION:PROGRAMME \nANTON WEBERN Variationen (1940)  \nAARON COPLAND Appalachian Spring (Ballet for Martha) (1944) \nRICHARD STRAUSS Metamorphosen (1945) \nMusicians List \nABOUT THIS EVENT \n \nSprings of Uncertainty\, a concert-stream-experience from the YST Orchestral Institute \n The swift red flesh\, a winter king—Who squired the glacier woman down the sky?She ran the neighing canyons all the spring; She spouted arms; she rose with maize—to die.                                                   – Harold Hart Crane \nThe YST Orchestral Institute in collaboration with YST Artist Fellow\, Mervin Wong\, presents a live concert-stream-experience featuring three chamber orchestra masterpieces\, all composed during the throngs of World War II: Anton Webern’s 1940 Variationen\, Aaron Copland’s 1944 Appalachian Spring (Ballet for Martha)\, and Richard Strauss’s 1945 Metamorphosen. As music with multiplicities that resonate with our tumultuous 2020\, all three works explore intersections of isolation\, anxiety\, humanity’s relationship with nature\, and the mourning of lost idealized worlds; yet\, in each piece there are also transcendent shimmers of hope. As the Conservatory’s virtual 20/21 concert series ponders\, “Am I Human?”\, we offer reflective springs that remind us that we’ve all been here before\, and we all belong. \n\nCompendium Springs takes a deeper\, more interactive look into the stories and undercurrents in the programme. For the full experience\, it is best viewed on mobile.\n \n\n\nMobile link (with sound and video): bit.ly/compendium-springs\nDesktop link: bit.ly/compendium-springs-desktop\n\nLIVE: \nYouTube: bit.ly/springsofuncertaintyYT\nFacebook: bit.ly/springsofuncertaintyFB\nSubscribe to YST’s mailing list. \nTICKETING INFORMATION \n• Due to COVID-19 related guidelines\, this performance will only be offered virtually. • All event information is correct at time of print.
