SUMMARY:Voice Discovery Series: Evolution of English Music
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE EVENT \nJoin Year 3 Voice majors who have curated this presentation as part of their Voice Literature class and members of the studio as they take you on an educational and entertaining experience. This event will shed some light on the Evolution of English Music with focus on Purcell and Britten. Examining the impact of Purcell’s music even on Britten\, we will discover how perhaps even modern English music has inherited traits from the Baroque. We will also delve a little into the barren period of English music composition from the late 1700s to the 1800s and examine the reasons for such a unique phenomenon. \nThis event will be livestreamed on the Conservatory’s YouTube channel. Follow and subscribe to be notified of upcoming streams. \nSubscribe to YST’s mailing list. \nTICKETING INFORMATION \n• Due to COVID-19 related guidelines\, this performance will only be offered virtually. • All event information is correct at time of print.

SUMMARY:OpusNovus: Lichtbogen
DESCRIPTION:PROGRAMME \nKAIJA SAARIAHOLichtbogen \nEMILY KOHtrans-[migra].nation \nPAUL HINDEMITHKammermusik Op. 24\, No. 1I. Sehr schnell und wildII. Mäßig schnelle Halbe. Sehr streng im RhythmusIII. Quartett: Sehr langsam und mit Ausdruck – Ein wenig belebter – Wieder ruhigIV. Finale 1921: Lebhaft \nMusicians List \nABOUT THIS EVENT \nOpusNovus presents an eclectic programme of three trailblazing composers of their times who broke free from traditions and sought out new artistic directions in their works. Kaija Saariaho\, one of Finland’s leading composers today\, opens the concert with her evocative work Lichtbogen (1986). The title was inspired by the Northern Lights\, and it marks her foray into new compositional territories at the famous Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique/Musique (IRCAM) in Paris\, a groundbreaking research lab where cutting edge technology meets music. \nSingaporean composer Emily Koh is currently Assistant Professor of Composition at the University of Georgia\, and also a proud alumnus from YST. Her work trans-[migra].nation (2010) was written in memory of Dr. Steven Baxter\, our Founding Director of YST and this year marks the 10th anniversary of his passing. \nLastly\, Paul Hindemith’s Kammermusik No. 1\, op. 24 (1922) marks an impressive entrance of the enfant terrible of German music at the famous Donaueschingen Music Festival\, where he challenges his traditions and broke new grounds by combining machine-like insistent rhythms\, popular dance music\, and even sardonic humor\, such as closing the work with a police siren!

SUMMARY:Forum Series: In Search of Singaporean Sounds - Navigating Musical and Cultural Confluences
DESCRIPTION:CHUREN LI\, presenterCHEN ZHANGYI\, presenter \nABOUT THIS EVENT \nAs Singapore’s arts scene matures\, musicians are moving away from older models of emulating the West\, and increasingly engaged with developing an individual voice. Born and (not completely) bred in Singapore\, Churen Li and Chen Zhangyi have pondered over the role that their Singaporean-ness plays in their approach to the art form that they are trained in\, which\, historically\, operates under a Western paradigm. With reference to Yayoi Uno Everett’s taxonomy of musical transference/synthesis/syncretism\, they explore possible resonances between Singaporean music and the dynamism of Singlish\, while discussing some of the issues relating to identity\, diaspora and syncretism through a lecture-recital centred on Singaporean piano music.  \nDrawing on their embodied knowledge as insiders to this musical and cultural phenomenon\, YST faculty explore some of the issues relating to identity\, diaspora and syncretism through a lecture-recital centred on Singaporean piano music.
