SUMMARY:[CANCELLED] Forum Series: Navigating Musical and Cultural Confluences - In Search of Singaporean Sounds
DESCRIPTION:In view of current health and travel advisories\, this event has been cancelled. We apologise for any inconvenience caused. \nFor more information on the status of YST events\, please visit: bit.ly/yst-updates \nCHEN ZHANGYI\, LI CHUREN\, presenters \nABOUT THE EVENT Leading postcolonial theorist\, Homi Bhabha\, argued that the colonialised adopt the cultural practices of the colonial master in the process of gaining power for themselves\, a process he terms “mimicry” (Bhabha 1984). As Singapore’s arts scene matures\, musicians are moving away from older models of emulating the West\, and increasingly engaged with developing an individual voice. Born and (not completely) bred in Singapore\, Churen Li and Chen Zhangyi have pondered over the role that their Singaporean-ness plays in their approach to the art form that they are trained in\, which\, historically\, operates under a Western paradigm. Drawing on their embodied knowledge as insiders to this musical and cultural phenomenon\, viewed through Yayoi Uno Everett’s taxonomy of musical transference/synthesis/syncretism\, they explore some of the issues relating to identity\, diaspora and syncretism through a lecture-recital centred on Singaporean piano music\, while also showcasing examples from Chen’s composition oeuvre. \nTICKETING INFORMATION • Free admission. • All event information is correct at time of print. • Out of respect for other concertgoers\, no children under 6 years of age will be allowed admission.

Allegro ma non troppo \nABOUT THIS EVENTIt is difficult to imagine a world without the music of Vienna’s Haydn\, Mozart\, and Beethoven: the trinity of Classical Music at the turn of the 18th-century. Connecting to the theme of the season\, Haydn’s deeply personal interpretation of The Seven Last Words of Christ deals with the concept of exaltation after an ultimate sacrifice. Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 14 is considered one of the earliest works of his mature period\, exuberating different shades of joy throughout its three movements. Beethoven’s 4th symphony is perhaps one of his most virtuosic orchestral pieces\, which to this day continues to demand a tremendous amount of technical facility and musical prowess from musicians; this could explain why it is undeservingly overshadowed by his enduring 5th symphony. \nThis performance will be led by returning Ong Teng Cheong Professor in Music\, the charismatic Gábor Takács-Nagy. \nTICKETING INFORMATION • Tickets at $10 from Eventbrite here • All event information is correct at time of print. • Out of respect for other concertgoers\, no children under 6 years of age will be allowed admission.

It is a discussion not just for educators\, but for students and parents too; it tackles issues both public and private music educators may confront\, raises questions students can reflect on and discusses decisions that parents often struggle with. ‘Teaching Collaboratively’ is the second of this series. It explores the benefits of teaming up with fellow teachers in classroom and instrumental teaching\, and strategies behind collaborative teaching. It is an honest discussion of the challenges and prejudices in teaching it brings up. \nABOUT THE PRESENTERS For pianist Khoo Hui Ling\, playing the piano is a vulnerable and precious expression of what is in the heart beyond where words can go. She enjoys sharing this experience through both performing and teaching. Hui Ling is currently Instructor in Music Studies at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music\, and Founder and Pedagogy Consultant at The Music Studios\, where she mentors piano teachers and students. Prior to her current teaching appointments\, she has taught in various capacities as a teaching intern at the Peabody Preparatory\, a Graduate Teaching Fellow at the University of Oregon and a Higher Music Programme teacher at Nanyang Girls’ High School in Singapore. \nRyan Lewis is a pianist and music educator from the UK. Currently working with ABRSM\, he is the South & East Asia Regional Consultant with a role to help develop their work and support teachers across the region\, as well as being a graded music examiner and workshop presenter. Ryan graduated from King’s College London and studied piano at the Royal Academy of Music. He also studied composition and piano at the University of Toronto\, Canada. More recently\, Ryan completed a Master’s degree in educational leadership\, which was affiliated through the Institute of Education\, University College London\, passing with distinction and awarded the University of London Academic Achievement Prize. His research focused on developing learning communities among private music studio teachers and he has since presented conference papers on this topic across Southeast Asia.
