We use our bodies and minds to craft something. We direct\, or are directed. We act inside of a system to create something larger than we could alone. As time moves forward and progress is made\, things are created to replace people. Machines that work better and faster than we do. Is this exploitative? Is something sacrificed? Do we become lost in the work? As The Assembly Line\, we try to find the lines that divide man and machine\, progress and regression\, humans and labour. The Mechanical Being brings together electronics\, acoustics\, automation\, and manual work in a spirit of cooperation. Spanning both film and music\, the programme presents a physical dialogue that happens between man and contraption. The interfacing that happens every day\, yet yields no further understanding between the two\, beyond what already exists. In The Garden of Earthly Delights\, live sound strives to communicate with film of the past. There will be a 10 minute dialogue and Q&A session following the final performance. \nTICKETING INFORMATION • Free admission. • All event information is correct at time of print. • Out of respect for other concertgoers\, no children under 6 years of age will be allowed admission.

SUMMARY:Composition Seminar: On My Recent Compositions
DESCRIPTION:JASON BUCHANAN\, presenter \nABOUT THE EVENT As a composer\, I am fascinated by the potential that technology offers for the manipulation of experiential time\, as well as its influence on society\, our perception\, and the human condition. My work explores fragmentation\, multiplicity\, and intelligibility\, leading to the development of a real-time audiovisual processing environment with increased emphasis on causality and clearly perceivable correlations between processes. Responding directly to performers’ physical actions through wearable technology\, this environment augments the relationship between physical and digital realms. Notation that influences modes of behavior rather than prescribing singular events has provided increased creative freedom to the interpreter\, creating musical spaces that are malleable and fluid. I am intrigued by the dialogue that takes place as discrete layers build a composite and contextualize one another\, exploring relationships between individual layers. This lecture unpacks the development of my creative processes over the past five years\, with a focus on my recent works for ensemble and technology including the multimedia opera Hunger (2014-15)\, walkside\, lost (2015) for Slagwerk Den Haag\, PANIC ARCHITECTURE (2017) for the Talea Ensemble\, and all-forgetting-is-retrieval (2019) for ensemble and augmented conductor\, exploring the formation of human memory\, retrieval\, and failure. \nABOUT THE ARTISTJason Thorpe Buchanan is an American composer\, Artistic Director of the [Switch~ Ensemble]\, and Department Chair/Lecturer in Composition\, Music Theory\, and Electroacoustic Music Composition at the College of Music\, Mahidol University in Thailand. He has been commissioned and widely sought internationally as a guest composer and lecturer by ensembles and institutions such as Alarm Will Sound\, Talea Ensemble\, Insomnio\, Nikel\, Linea\, Interface\, EXAUDI\, Eklekto Percussion\, Slagwerk Den Haag\, Mivos Quartet\, wild Up\, Royaumont\, TACETi\, the University of Chicago\, Stanford University\, UT Austin\, TRANSIT Festival (Belgium)\, the Bergen Center for Elektronisk Kunst (BEK)\, and the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble. Scenes from his multimedia opera Hunger have received performances at Darmstadt\, The Industry’s FIRST TAKE in L.A.\, and MATA in NYC with the [Switch~ Ensemble]. Honors include a Fulbright Fellowship in Hamburg\, Germany\, nomination for the Gaudeamus Prize (Netherlands)\, AiR USF Verftet Bergen (Norway)\, an American-Scandinavian Foundation Grant\, AiR Embassy of Foreign Artists\, Geneva (Switzerland)\, and winner of Iron Composer. He served for three years as Executive Director of the VIPA Festival (Spain)\, and holds a Ph.D. from the Eastman School of Music. DESCRIPTION:LIM YAN\, pianoLEE SHI MEI\, violin \nPROGRAMMEBEETHOVEN Violin Sonata No.10 in G major Op. 96 I Allegro moderato II Adagio espressivo III Scherzo: Allegro IV Poco allegretto \nBRAHMS Violin Sonata No. 2 in A major\, Op. 100 I Allegro amabile II Andante tranquillo – Vivace III Allegretto grazioso \n— Intermission — \nBRAHMS Three Intermezzi\, Op. 117 I Andante moderato II Andante non troppo e con molto espressione III Andante con moto \nSCHUMANN Violin Sonata No.1 in A minor\, Op. 105 I Mit leidenschaftlichem Ausdruck II Allegretto III Lebhaft \nABOUT THE EVENTBetween 1798 and 1803\, Beethoven wrote nine violin sonatas\, but there was a hiatus of nine years before his final work in the genre; the contrast in style with the previous sonatas is stark\, reflecting the evolution in Beethoven’s musical voice over that time. Schumann and Brahms\, who can be considered to be Beethoven’s successors in the Germanic tradition\, wrote their violin sonatas relatively late in their careers. YST Collaborative Piano faculty Lim Yan with long-time collaborator Lee Shi Mei present this programme of three sonatas which share a motivic connection (as alluded to in the programme title)\, which also appears in Brahms’s Three Intermezzi for piano solo. \n \nTICKETING INFORMATION• Tickets at $10 from Eventbrite • All event information is correct at time of print. • Out of respect for other concertgoers\, no children under 6 years of age will be allowed admission.
