PortugalDois Motivos \nAnonymousVirgem Pura \nAnonymousHino do Espírito Santo \nABOUT THIS EVENT \nThe Concert 19th century Portuguese Music promotes the poetry and music of Portuguese authors. At its core is the investigation of musical sources and the performance of works by Portuguese authors or residents in Portugal during the 19th century. Most of these authors\, poets and composers\, are unknown. In this concert\, popular music and popular lyrics as well as more educated music\, were adapted to voice and keyboard during the late 19th century and published in the city of Porto. Few examples of these publications still exist today. We aim to perform this music for the 21st century public and to bring back memories of the songs that we heard from our grandparents. The repertoire of the concert includes works from the CDs released in 2017 and 2019. Although most of these works are not performed nowadays and therefore virtually unknown\, some still endure\, especially in children’s rimes and some themes were successively reused in works by more recent Portuguese authors such as Alexandre Rey-Colaço. \n\n\n\n\nAbout The Performers\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn partnership with: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSupported by: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETING INFORMATION\n• Free admission.• All event information is correct at time of print.• Out of respect for other concertgoers\, no children under 6 years of age will be allowed admission.

SUMMARY:Composition Seminar: Current Trends In Korean Contemporary Music Scene
DESCRIPTION:SEUNG JAE CHUNG\, presenter\nABOUT THE EVENT\nSince 2000\, the contemporary music scene in Korea has changed drastically\, absorbing various musical styles. This presentation explores four trends: avant-garde music with strong experimental spirit (a trend that has continued for several decades); Neo-Romantic music (new in Korea); attempts to combine traditional and western elements (more present than ever before); and the revival of contemporary opera (with many productions in recent years due to government support). \nABOUT THE PRESENTER\nSeung Jae Chung received his bachelor’s degree at the Seoul National University\, and his master’s and doctoral degrees at the Manhattan School of Music. He studied conducting with David Gebert; electronic music with Pierre Charvet; and composition with Chung-Gil Kim\, Giampaolo Bracali\, Nils Vegeland\, and Richard Danielpour. \nHis works have been selected for the 1996 Gaudeamus Music Week in Amsterdam\, the Netherlands; Asahi Art Festival 2004 in Tokyo\, Japan; 2004 Asian Composers League Music Festival in Israel; and 2005 ISCM(International Society for Contemporary Music) World Music Days in Zagreb\, Croatia. He has been commissioned by Tongyeong International Music Festival\, TIMF Ensemble\, VECM (Vocal Ensemble for Contemporary Music)\, Korean Piano Duo Association\, Ensemble Eclat\, Ensemble Sori\, Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra\, among others. \nMr Chung served as Director of the Electronic Music Studio at the Manhattan School of Music from 1998 to 2000. He is currently President of ACL-Korea and Professor at the Sangmyung University Department of Music. \nTICKETING INFORMATION\n• Free admission.• All event information is correct at time of print.• Out of respect for other concertgoers\, no children under 6 years of age will be allowed admission.

SUMMARY:Forum Series: Theremins - Music From The Air
DESCRIPTION:DR ALEXEI SOURIN\, presenter \nABOUT THIS EVENT \nIn 1920\, Russian scientist Lev Sergeevich Termen (Leon Theremin) invented the first electronic musical instrument\, which was initially called the etherphone but later renamed the theremin after its inventor. No physical contact is involved with the instrument; the performer controls pitch and volume with the position of his/her hands in the air. Envisaged by its inventor as an instrument for every home (which never happened)\, it remains among the most curious and fascinating musical instruments. Dr Sourin will speak about the theremin’s history and present two theremins; audience members will also have a unique opportunity to play the instruments. \nABOUT THE PRESENTER\nDr. Alexei Sourin is Associate Professor at the School of Computer Science and Engineering of the Nanyang Technological University. He came to Singapore 25 years ago. His teaching and research (with more than 230 papers published) is in computer graphics\, virtual reality and new user-computer interfaces. Alexei Sourin is investigating how the theremin\, which is often considered as one of the most difficult to master musical instruments\, can become an instrument for every home when digital music is combined with computer graphics. \nTICKETING INFORMATION\n• Free admission.• All event information is correct at time of print.• Out of respect for other concertgoers\, no children under 6 years of age will be allowed admission. \nPhoto credits: School of Computer Science and Engineering\, NTU

It is the framing of the conventional recital into the form of an experience. The work seeks to explore the relationship between man and his creator in two segments: an installation\, which inhabits the space to create sensory experiences both in the day and evening\, and an evening performance (alongside the installation). The performance features compositions by Chen Zhangyi and J. S. Bach\, with sonic reflections by Mervin. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nSee also: 22 August Performance\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProgramme Notes\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETING INFORMATION\n• Free admission.• All event information is correct at time of print.
