Fuga: Allegro con spirito \n  \nABOUT THE EVENT \nWe have come to associate the letter “B” with many of the great composers\, with Bach\, Beethoven and Brahms respectfully referred to as “The Three B’s.“ Pianist Thomas Hecht follows pathways from the Old World to the New – drawing parallels to an American “B”\, the neoclassic composer Samuel Barber\, whose piano writing owes as much to the pithy sonatas of Beethoven as it does to the enriched sonorities of Brahms. Featured on Prof. Hecht’s dynamic programme will be the Six Bagatelles (Op. 126) of Beethoven\, the haunting Four Ballades (Op. 10) of Brahms and Barber’s Ballade (1977) and Sonata (1949)\, a 20th-century tour de force. \n  \nABOUT THOMAS HECHT \nRenowned American pianist and pedagogue Thomas Hecht is the founding Head of Keyboard Studies at the YST Conservatory in Singapore. Over the span of three decades he has concertised on five continents as concerto soloist\, recitalist\, chamber musician. Professor Hecht also enjoys a well-deserved reputation as one of the leading teachers of his generation\, having produced a multitude of first prizewinners in solo and two piano competitions throughout the United States\, Europe and Australasia. \nThomas Hecht is a Steinway Artist\, with recordings on the Delos\, Azica\, Elysium & Atoll Labels. \n  \nRegister Here \nPresent your ticket/confirmation at Bar Bar Black Sheep (Kent Ridge) to enjoy 20% off food\, and beer/wine/cocktails & more at $4.90 nett each! *Valid only on date of ticket \n  \nTICKETING INFORMATION \n• Ticketing via Eventbrite registration.• All event information is correct at time of print.• Out of respect for other concertgoers\, no children under 6 years of age will be allowed admission.

SUMMARY:Forum Series: The Art Of Fugue: The Culminating Work Of Bach’s Final Decade
DESCRIPTION:DANIEL HERSCOVITCH\, presenter \n“The Art of Fugue preserves the purest spirit of the highest form of baroque art. The work is a philosophical breviary\, every measure of which invites reflection and thought.” \nPaul Henry Lang \nABOUT THE EVENT The Art of Fugue marks the conclusion of Bach’s compositional career. In this presentation Associate Professor Daniel Herscovitch from The University of Sydney Conservatorium of Music discusses this work and its relationship to the other five major compositions of Bach’s final decade. He examines various issues raised by these works\, some of these being genre\, the implications of their titles\, numerology\, the forms in which they have come down to us and their place within the performance practice of the time. This presentation will challenge some of the assumptions of received wisdom and conclude by discussing various issues to be addressed in preparing a performance of The Art of Fugue on the modern piano. \n  \nTICKETING INFORMATION• Free admission.• All event information is correct at time of print.• Out of respect for other concertgoers\, no children under 6 years of age will be allowed admission. \nPhoto credits: Dominic Blake

Are we successful at connecting with our listeners and conveying to them the entire gamut of emotions contained in the score? Are audiences aware of the basic elements of a particular musical language they are asked to appreciate? These considerations became the starting point for their study of the ways to approach the interpretation of a work\, to engage the audience\, and to rethink the traditional concert format. \nThe Ensemble Dialoghi aims to offer an innovative approach to the music of the Classical and Romantic eras. It seeks to emphasise the interconnections between instrumental music and other genres and art forms (opera\, stage plays\, poetry\, and painting)\, but also to absorb the traditions and attitudes of the musical and social milieu of the period in the hope of shedding new light on the expressive aspects of the music that may lie hidden behind the notes. \nThe Ensemble Dialoghi\, whose name symbolises a desire to communicate\, feels the need to acquaint audiences with the building blocks which make up the musical language of each era. By exploring this distinctive ‘musical code’ and placing it in its historical context\, one can glean certain aspects of the score that might otherwise go unnoticed. This process has shown itself to be an essential tool for bringing us closer to the experience of our precursors. \nThe ensemble’s insistence on period instruments stems from the same intent. The instruments used by its members prove to be a fundamental tool for a rediscovery of the full expressive potential of the music. The nucleus of the ensemble is for winds and fortepiano\, which can combine into various groupings: a quintet favoured by the Viennese Classical masters\, a trio typical of the Romantic period (piano\, clarinet\, and horn)\, and other combinations that may be required by the repertoire dating from the first half of the twentieth century. \nMembers of the ensemble have been performing together for some years\, notably as players of the Freiburger Barockorchester\, in Europa Galante\, La Petite Bande\, and other European orchestras. The ensemble can often be heard in Europe\, as well as in Canada\, Japan\, and Singapore. Its musicians are passionate about sharing their vision with the new generation of players as part of the master classes which regularly accompany their concerts. \n  \nTICKETING INFORMATION• Free admission.• All event information is correct at time of print.• Out of respect for other concertgoers\, no children under 6 years of age will be allowed admission. \n  \nPhoto credits: Igor Studio\, Barcelona

I consider it myself to be the best thing I ever wrote in my life. How I wish you could have heard it; and how beautifully it was executed!” The quintets of Mozart and Beethoven are true little jewels of the chamber music repertoire\, engaging the audience with a variety of emotions: operalike dialogues and improvisation\, drama and humor… An experience made of contrasts! \nThe ENSEMBLE DIALOGHI (Spain) offers an innovative approach to music of the Classical and Romantic periods. The ensemble stands out for its highest level of artistry and its ability to (re)connect with audiences. Its members perform on period instruments and share with audiences the musical language’s main keys in order to unveil all the emotions intrinsic to the music. The ensemble’s debut recording featuring Mozart and Beethoven quintets with fortepiano was released in 2017. \n  \nRegister Here \nPresent your ticket/confirmation at Bar Bar Black Sheep (Kent Ridge) to enjoy 20% off food\, and beer/wine/cocktails & more at $4.90 nett each! *Valid only on date of ticket \n\n\n  \n\n\n \nTICKETING INFORMATION• Free admission via Eventbrite registration.• All event information is correct at time of print.• Out of respect for other concertgoers\, no children under 6 years of age will be allowed admission. \nPhoto credits: Igor Studio\, Barcelona

SUMMARY:AAS Series: Jens Ulrich Braun - Video Production For Classical Music
DESCRIPTION:PROGRAMME 10.00am – 12.00pm: Seminar \n2.00 – 4.00pm: Seminar \n  \nABOUT THE EVENTVideo is getting progressively more important in classical music. Musicians – soloists\, choirs and orchestras alike – are expressing a growing interest in having their work documented for distribution on social media platforms like Facebook\, YouTube or Vimeo. Many audio recordings are accompanied by video productions of varying lengths and formats\, to be presented at the release of the CD. A growing number of orchestras have their concerts available live either on streaming services or posted live on their YouTube channels or webpages. \nSetting up an audio-only microphone array for an extensive score like Mahler’s Second Symphony is no easy task to begin with – but working on a full-scale video production imposes different difficulties for both audio and video crews. They need to meet the demands of the video producer\, and at the same time guarantee a high degree of sonic quality. This seminar discusses the preparation and workflow for video-recording the Singapore Symphony Orchestra ́s Mahler 2 project at the Esplanade Concert Hall in January 2019. \nDuring the first part of the seminar\, we will look at the audio setup and microphone array/positioning used in combination with the camera placements. The second part covers the recording workflow and postproduction of the project. \nTo learn more about Jens’s work\, visit: \nvimeo.com/jensbrauntake5-music-production.com \n  \nRegister Here \nTICKETING INFORMATION \n• Free admission via Eventbrite.• All event information is correct at time of print.• Out of respect for other concertgoers\, no children under 6 years of age will be allowed admission.

SUMMARY:Lecture: History Of The Instruments - From The Flutist's Point Of View
DESCRIPTION:LILIKO MAEDA\, flute/presenter \n  \nABOUT THIS EVENTAs mankind keeps evolving\, instruments keep evolving. But is it true that instruments have improved and become better? The instruments which Bach knew were different from what we now know. Bach knew all the good and bad points of his contemporary instruments\, and he composed the pieces which are the most suitable for them. Instruments have been changed in conformity with social development. Therefore\, we have to know these instruments and their performing customs in order to perform the music as Bach imagined. In this lecture\, we learn the history of the development of instruments\, wind instruments in particular\, and the performance customs of the Baroque period. \n  \nABOUT THE PRESENTERLiliko Maeda won the first prize in the flute category of All Japan Student’s Music Competition (Western Japan) while she learned the modern flute under Shinya Koide. \nShortly afterwards\, she took up the baroque flute\, and went to study at the Toho Gakuen School of Music with Masahiro Arita. She continued her studies at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague with Wilbert Hazelzet and Barthold Kuijken. In 1996\, she won the first prize at International Competition for Early Music YAMANASHI. In 1999\, she was awarded the second prize (highest prize for flute) at the Brugge Early Music Competition. \nLiliko is active in performing and recording with various flutes from medieval times to the 19th century as a soloist as well as a member of Soffio Armonico and Bach Collegium Japan. \nLiliko’s strong interest on the flute history lead her to write a book “History of the flute – a portrait”\, published by TOKYO SHOSEKI. \nShe teaches at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. \n  \nTICKETING INFORMATION• Free admission.• All event information is correct at time of print.• Out of respect for other concertgoers\, no children under 6 years of age will be allowed admission.
