Heinrich Neuhaus & Performer’s Subjectivity: "The most important task of the pianist is to discover himself"

"The most important task of the pianist is to discover himself." Maria Razumovskaya puts the focus on legendary Russian pianist-pedagogue Heinrich Neuhaus, the teacher of Emil Gilels and Sviatoslav Richter. The forum explores Neuhaus's distinct vision of a performer's subjectivity, revealing his importance in championing a powerful interdisciplinary practice adopted in Soviet Russia by creative artists determined to escape the banality and limitations imposed by Socialist Realism. It explores his unique concept of 'autobiographicality', profound friendship and collaboration with Boris Pasternak, and distinct vision of Beethoven and Chopin (and associated piano techniques) that became integral in the Russian piano tradition.
