Realizing the importance of improvisation, and the potential for it’s applications in teaching, the theory department of the Royal Conservatoire of Den Haag has done an extensive re-thinking of the curriculum over the past years. This has resulted in a new content and organization of the supporting theoretical subjects for all classical performance students. Improvisation is used to activate the ears, develop ensemble playing and ‘explain’ theoretical concepts. Aural development is extended to a three year course, with a final presentation in the form of a small concert at the end. Today's presentation will give an overview, as well as practical examples of the use of improvisation in teaching situations.
