After graduating from the Sibelius Academy with excellent grades, Merit Palas continued her studies abroad, first with Professor Vladimir Avramov in the State Conservatory in Sofia, and later on with Arthur Grumiaux in Belgium. Her début recitals took place both at the Savonlinna Opera Festival and in the Sibelius Academy Concert Series.

Her career as an orchestra musician includes positions in the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra (III concertmaster) and in the Tapiola Sinfonietta Chamber Orchestra (II violin leader). In 1993 she started working as a regular Lecturer in Violin in the Sibelius Academy. She also was substitute Professor in Violin in 2010-2011. Her other duties include positions of Head of the Orchestral Instruments' Department during the years 2001-2008 and Head of Strings in 2008-2010.  She also was President of ESTA Finland (European String Teachers’ Association) In 2002-2009.

Merit Palas was the first violinist to graduate from the artistic line of doctoral studies of the Sibelius Academy. Her doctoral concert series included solo sonatas of J. S. Bach, J. G. Pisendel and Kalevi Aho, in addition to the full circle of the sonatas of Beethoven. Her doctoral thesis deals with the articulation of the Solo Sonatas of J. S. Bach, explored from the rhetorical point of view.

Merit Palas performs and gives master classes regularly both in Finland and abroad (in Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Danmark, Estonia, Great-Britain, Hungary, Iceland, The Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and USA). As soloist she has worked with Paavo Berglund, Igor Bezrodny and Jukka-Pekka Saraste, among others. She has also played numerous recitals and chamber music concerts with her husband Jussi Siirala.
