Pulcinella <1919-20, rev. 1948>
Pulcinella was Igor Stravinsky's first foray into a style that would eventually be known as Neoclassicism; the Russian composer would go on to produce a substantial output of works that were inspired by musical aesthetics that were associated with the 17th and 18th centuries, subsequently inspiring his contemporaries such as Milhaud, Poulenc, Honneger, Strauss, Bartok, Kodaly and Martinu to also draw their musical material from works of the past.
Performed on period instruments, the first half of this concert will feature works that have directly inspired Stravinsky's composition. Conductor and early music specialist Masaaki Suzuki returns to YST with musicians from Bach Collegium Japan to work with the Conservatory Orchestra in this special performance.
