  • Conservatory Recording Studio YST Conservatory 117376 Singapore (map)

Session I: 10.00am - 12.00pm
Session II: 2.00 - 6.00pm

Paul Jeukendrup studied Music Registration and Electronic Composition at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague, The Netherlands, specializing in sound reinforcement design for music and music theatre. During his studies, he developed a strong interest in contemporary music, meeting composers John Cage, Mauricio Kagel and Olivier Messiaen in school projects.

After his studies he collaborated with numerous Dutch composers, amongst them Louis Andriessen, Cornelis de Bondt and Martijn Padding. Soon he was in demand by many of the Dutch new music ensembles, such as Netherlands Wind Ensemble, ASKO / Schönberg Ensemble and the Dutch Radio Orchestras. In 1995 the Holland Festival invited him to make the sound design for the world premiere of Karlheinz Stockhausen's HELIKOPTER STREICHQUARTETT, performed by the Arditti String Quartet. This was his first introduction to Stockhausen and his music, but certainly not the last. In the year 2000 it was again the Holland Festival which approached Jeukendrup for making the sound design for the world premiere of 200 Motels -‐ The Suites from Frank Zappa.

During his close collaboration with composer and conductor Peter Eötvös he worked on his opera's Tri Sestry and Le Balcon, and designed the electronics for piano concerto CAPKO. Meanwhile he accepted a position as guest teacher at the Royal Conservatoire, The Hague.

In 2002, Musikfest Berlin brought him in touch with the German ensemble musikFabrik, with whom he would perform numerous Stockhausen compositions. Amongst those performances were the European tour of MICHAELS REISE, the first integral performance of the KLANG cyclus (May 2010) and the first integral performance of SONNTAG aus LICHT (2011). The Lincoln Center in New York engaged Jeukendrup for five of the concerts in their Sonic Evolutions Festival in 2004 with Louis Andriessen as composer in residence. In 2008 he was invited by Musikfest Berlin to make the sound design for Stockhausen's GRUPPEN, performed in the huge Hangar 2 in Berlin Tempelhof by the Berliner Philharmoniker, conducted by Sir Simon Rattle, Daniel Harding and Michael Boder. This concert was chosen as one of "The Ten Best Classical-‐Music Performances of 2008" by Alex Ross (The New Yorker, December 8, 2008). In 2013 he was invited by the Ruhrtriennale to make the sound design for Harry Partch’s Delusion of the Fury, directed by Heiner Goebbels.

Since 2009, next to his work as a sound reinforcement designer, Jeukendrup is leading the Art of Sound department at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague.
